The best power forward evah! is back on the Canes!!!!
I can barely think for the excitement!!!!
The Canes traded for him in a with the Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers. The Canes got Patrick O'Sullivan and a 2nd round draft pick for Justin Williams, then dealt O'Sullivan and the pick to Edmonton for Cole and their 5th round pick.
It is a shame that Williams had to go, as he has been with the team a long time and is a very good player (Hello, empty net goal in Game 7!). But, the good news for the Canes is (other than reaquiring my man Cole, of course) that Williams was out with an injury, and this trade brings someone who is actually in the lineup right now.
I honestly can't believe it. I knew that Cole was in the trade rumors, but I thought that Rutherford seemed pretty much set on not dealing anything with what was being offered.
I think that if it was for any other player, I would be lamenting the loss of Justin Williams more. It's definitely going to be wierd not seeing the number 11 on the ice Friday.
But ERIK COLE IS BACK and I couldn't be happier!

Canes win one and lose one
Well... I'm not sure what to think of this weekend.
On Valentine's Day, the Canes got their butt kicked for the second game in a row, losing 5-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets. This game wasn't much better than the previous shutout, except, of course, that this time the Canes managed to score a goal. And there were some better chances than in the Florida game, but that doesn't change the fact that the Canes handily lost this one.
Then, last night, the Canes had a shutout of their own, beating Buffalo 3-0. Wasn't able to watch this game, as it wasn't on TV, but from what I've gleaned from the highlights and recap, it looks like the Canes got out to an early lead and were able to keep it for the entire game. Watching some of the saves made, the Canes probably could have scored some more goals.
The bad news following this win is that Justin Williams broke a bone in his hand and will be out at least a month. Man, this guy just can't stay healthy! (Although, this development makes the Jussi Jokinen trade look particularly good.)
The next game is tomorrow against the Bruins. Hopefully the Canes will put on a good show, as it's Glen Wesley night, with the number 2 being raised to the rafters.

Canes win in OT!
Canes won 2-1 over the Panthers in overtime last night.
Last night was completely awesome for me, as I not only got to attend the game, but I also sat in the lower bowl. And I was really close to the ice:
And, if you don't think that's close to the ice, then you have much better seats than I usually do. Jealous!
The only problem with said seats is that I don't really like the end section that low - it's sometimes hard to judge what's going on down at the other end.
Anyways, I thought the Canes played pretty well. I really appreciate Tuomo Ruutu that close to the ice - I saw a lot more of the fighting for the puck along the boards and the physicalness that he plays the game with.
Justin Williams scored his first goal since coming back from injury, and it was a power play goal as well! That goal was the deciding factor until the third period - Cory Stillman came out of the penalty box into a breakaway.
Canes played well in the overtime, Joe Corvo scoring the OT goal. I imagine it looked something like this shot, taken in the second period:
Except that the goal was scored on a backhand. Whatever. Use your imagination.
Anyway, the point is that the Canes won against a division rival and took over 8th place in the East. YaY Canes!

Same old, same old
Well, the firing of Laviolette didn't spur the Canes on to victory - they lost 5-2 to the Pens last night.
Granted, they did come out with somewhat more of a spark than they had in games past. But it was nowhere near what is needed to win, especially against a loaded team like Pittsburgh.
I will say, though, that Tuomo Ruutu definitely ate his Wheaties before the game - he was on fire, crashing the net and just being where he needed to be. Sergei Samsonov, playing on the same line, also was pretty good. (They had a goal and an assist between them).
However, Josef Melichar played on the opposite end of the spectrum, being pretty much directly responsible for two of the Pens goals. Needless to say, I'm not that disappointed that he was sent to Albany today, and Casey Borer and Tim Conboy were recalled.
Justin Williams played pretty well for his first game back from injury - probably better than some of the Canes who are perfectly healthy.

Thanksgiving was not very kind to the Canes record
Soooo... The Canes went 1-3 over my Thanksgiving break... Not very good.
First, the Canes lost to Florida 3-2.
Then they lost to Philadelphia 3-1 (while wearing their third jerseys... making them 2-2 on the season with them... I'm not exactly sure why I'm continuing that stat, other than now that I've started, I certainly can't stop...)
Then they won in Philly 3-2 in overtime. I saw the first period of that game (while eating a delicious cheesesteak), which was merely an okay showing by the Canes. I also saw Wade Brookbank's fight, which was an excellent fight to watch, the referees letting them go at it for quite a bit. Don't think either one won the fight, though.
Sergei Samsonov scored in the overtime period.
Finally, they lost 4-1 to the Ducks yesterday. About the time of puck drop I was lamenting the Washington Redskins' slow shuttle system to take us back to our parking spot all the way on the other side of I-495. Yep, I went the Giants-Redskins game on the way back from Pennsylvania - froze my butt off in the stupid mist, too (although my six layers of clothing did keep me moderately warm...)
Anyways... Canes lost Cam Ward to a groin injury in that Ducks game - he'll be out for the next three games and Justin Peters will be called up to back up Leighton.
Good news on the injury front (unexpected news as well) is that Justin Williams of all people will more than likely be back on the ice sometime this week. And this is after busting his Achilles' tendon in training camp. ("Busting" being the proper medical term in cases such as these.) Good news - we could definitely use him out on the ice. I just hope he doesn't get injured from coming back too fast.
Next game is on Thursday against Pittsburgh.

And it's not even training camp yet...

My goodness. This makes the announcement about Rod Brind'Amour yesterday seem like absolutely nothing.
I implore our remaining forwards to refrain from any strenuous activity, lest they be injured as well.
And I am so close to hitting the Panic Button on this season already. Not so much because of the loss of Williams (although, this is a big loss ), but because it does not bode well that the injury bug is striking so early, and with such efficiency.

Bad news for Williams
Justin Williams is undergoing reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn ACL. He is expected to be out for 4-6 months. Months!
In the meantime, the Canes have called up Brandon Nolan from Albany.

Canes lose to Florida. Boo!
Canes lost last night 5-4 to Florida.
I saw only the third period, as I was doing some Christmas shopping last night. Apparently the Canes were up 3-1 at the end of the first, but let Florida tie it up in the second.
In the part I watched, Florida scored a goal right in front, then Whitney scored off of a nice Erik Cole pass from the boards 29 seconds later. The Canes seemed like they were playing well, but then Florida got another goal, and that was the one that won the game.
The bad news for this one is twofold. The Canes now only lead Florida in the division standings by 3 points. And Justin Williams went out in the first period with a knee injury. From the N&O:

Meanwhile, in the "surprising news that I learned from SportsCenter this morning" category there are two items.
One: Duke lost to Pittsburgh!
Two: Sid Crosby had a Gordie Howe hat trick last night against Boston. Which is weird, because he certainly didn't seem like a fighter to me. But he did a pretty good number on the Boston dude.
Next Canes game is against the Lightning on Saturday.

The catch-up post
Wow... I haven't posted since... Tuesday? That's pretty bad.
So, here's the obligatory catch-up post.
On Wednesday the Canes lost 6-1 to the Lightning. The Canes started out okay in the first, but fell completely apart in the second, allowing 5 goals. Williams was the only one who seemed like he was at least trying to play. (On a random note - I really like Williams' hair. It looks really good.)
On Friday the Canes lost 3-0 to the Thrashers. The Canes got behind in the first on two Marian Hossa goals, and they just never came back. Not that they had a lack of chances - I specifically remember two open net chances in the second period off of misplays by goalie Johan Hedburg - not capitalized on!
An interesting occurence was that almost every time the Thrashers got a penalty, they seemed to be hauling down Chad LaRose. Pick on somebody your own size!
On Saturday (in a rare back-to-back home stand) the Canes beat Florida 2-1. I listened to the Chuck Kaiton call of the win because the game wasn't televised. From what I heard/paid attention to, it sounded like the Canes played better.
That's it for now. This week I'll be better at posting regularly because it's Thanksgiving - no school!

Canes lost 3-2 to Washington in OT yesterday.
This is the second Carolina-Washington matchup that has gone into OT. And it's only preseason! Is this some sort of omen?
Anyways... have no idea what happened in the game, having not watched/listened to it. But according to ye olde scoresheet, the Canes were down 2-0 by the end of the second period, but came back to tie it in the third.
Wait... this sounds really similar to the last C[r]apitals preseason game... I mean with goals by Williams and Cole in both... And the Canes coming back in the third... And both games going into OT... Are we sure they didn't just transpose the score of the last game? This is kind of freaky.
Anyways... roster's down to 25 now... two more preseason games to go... Then... THE SEASON STARTS! YaY!

Canes win first preseason game!
Canes win 4-3 in overtime in their first preseason game!
Having attended, I can tell you that the Canes have already got into their regular-season form: get behind and have a killer third period to come back and win it.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing...
Anyways... the first two periods were kind of bland. The Canes had offense, but it just didn't seem spectactular in any way. Same with the C[r]apitals. Their first goal was a fluke from the blue line, and I honestly can't remember what the second was like.
Then the third period came, and with it came the Canes offense. Noah Babin scored the first goal, and then Erik Cole came streaking down the wing less than a minute later to tie the game up at two. Then, with 3 minutes left, the Canes let one through to get the C[r]apitals ahead, but Justin Williams answered back with a minute left, off of a nice pass by Ryan Bayda.
Then overtime came, and Erik Cole was credited with another goal, this one being tipped from a Eric Staal shot. I thought a Washington dude had tipped it in, but apparently not.
So, to recap, the good news:
- Erik Cole looks as awesome as he ever was.
- Eric Staal ended up with three assists.
- Michael Leighton (the goalie obtained from the Canadiens (I think it was Montreal, at least...)) looked pretty decent in goal.
- Commodore looked solid, with a couple pinches in on net... Gleason looked pretty solid as well.
- Hockey is back!
- We won!
The bad news:
- None of the new guys stood out. I didn't really focus on anybody and say "That's one I'll have to watch out for". Not good.
- I hate the new scoresheets online. I want to see how many shots Grahame let in versus Leighton (and how to spell Leighton's name) - it doesn't tell you! I mean, the new stats (shots on goal during 5v5, 5v4, 4v4, etc.) are nice, but why did they take away stats? Makes no sense at all.
- The whole no-offense for the first forty minutes thing. I mean, it's nice when the Canes can pull it off - not so when they can't.
Next game is on Friday. YaY for hockey!

Canada wins gold
Canada won the Gold Medal in the World Championships, being propelled forward by Cam Ward's win, Eric Staal's goal, and Justin William's assist.
Ottawa took a 2-0 lead in their series against Buffalo (Yes!) with a 4-3 win in 2OT Saturday night. It was the first time in their franchise history that they won both of the first two games in a series. The third game starts at 7pm tonight.
Anaheim tied Detroit in their series with a 4-3 win in one less period than the Ottawa game. (For those bad at math, that would be 1OT...)
That's it, really.

Trophy nominations and the Worlds
Rod Brind'Amour was nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy again this year!
Cam Ward and Justin Williams kicked behind in Canada's win over Norway on Monday.
Today, USA lost to the Czech Republic 4-3. Chad LaRose got a goal and Andrew Hutchinson got a goal as well.
Lindy Ruff needs to shut up. Get the gag order out!

A rather blunt post...
The Canes who will be playing in the World Championships are: Mike Commodore, Eric Staal, Cam Ward, Justin Williams (for team Canada) and Chad LaRose, Andrew Hutchinson, John Grahame and the best power forward evah!
A rather blunt way to begin the post, but there's nothing else to really begin with...
Ottawa won last night, thereby winning in the Pittsburgh series 4-1.
Anaheim won last night, thereby winning in the Minnesota series 4-1.
Calgary won last night, tying their series with Detroit 2-2!
And, Dallas won in overtime, bringing that series to only a 3-2 Vancouver lead.
Tonight, Buffalo and San Jose could win, and either New Jersey or Tampa will take the lead in that series. Me hopes my foster team wins.

What You Should Know About Drinking Water and Lead
Yes, the title has nothing to do with the post. But I like it.
Sadly, I would rather be talking about water and lead rather than discussing the 5-1 loss to the Flyers the Hurricanes suffered last night.
Painful to watch, the game was. Ray Whitney scored the only goal for the Canes at the end of the second period. That was probably the only bright spot for the Canes.
Some of the bad:
- Justin Williams missing the penalty shot. Why do we even bother? A Canes player hasn't connected on a penalty shot/shootout attempt since what, November?
- The Canes going 0-5 on the power play. Seriously, Canes, take a page from the NFL and just decline the penalty. Not that going 5-on-5 would've helped them in this game...
- Craig Adams' hit on Denis Gauthier. It looked like a shot from behind, which is horrible...
- The refs. Instead of calling a boarding penalty on Adams in the above bullet point, they give a double minor to the Flyer that went to defend Gauthier. Granted, I'm glad the call went in the Canes favor (not that it did them a lot of good)... but what the heck? (Refs were Tim Peel and Wes McCauley, both are previous owners of a spot on the "Bad Refs List".)
Anyways... this deplorable loss by the Canes keeps them tied for ninth place in the standings, but with the tiebreakers they're 11th. Honestly, with this loss went some of my hope for a playoff spot. I think the Canes can still make it, but the road gets a lot harder from here. So hard, that I think they have to win out to get in. I think they can do it... just as long as they don't play like they did these past two games.
Next game is tomorrow against Tampa. Every game is a must win from here on out.
Sadly, I would rather be talking about water and lead rather than discussing the 5-1 loss to the Flyers the Hurricanes suffered last night.
Painful to watch, the game was. Ray Whitney scored the only goal for the Canes at the end of the second period. That was probably the only bright spot for the Canes.
Some of the bad:
- Justin Williams missing the penalty shot. Why do we even bother? A Canes player hasn't connected on a penalty shot/shootout attempt since what, November?
- The Canes going 0-5 on the power play. Seriously, Canes, take a page from the NFL and just decline the penalty. Not that going 5-on-5 would've helped them in this game...
- Craig Adams' hit on Denis Gauthier. It looked like a shot from behind, which is horrible...
- The refs. Instead of calling a boarding penalty on Adams in the above bullet point, they give a double minor to the Flyer that went to defend Gauthier. Granted, I'm glad the call went in the Canes favor (not that it did them a lot of good)... but what the heck? (Refs were Tim Peel and Wes McCauley, both are previous owners of a spot on the "Bad Refs List".)
Anyways... this deplorable loss by the Canes keeps them tied for ninth place in the standings, but with the tiebreakers they're 11th. Honestly, with this loss went some of my hope for a playoff spot. I think the Canes can still make it, but the road gets a lot harder from here. So hard, that I think they have to win out to get in. I think they can do it... just as long as they don't play like they did these past two games.
Next game is tomorrow against Tampa. Every game is a must win from here on out.

Curse you Matt Cullen!
Canes lost 2-1 in a shootout against the Rangers today.
I will attribute the shootout woes this season to Matt Cullen leaving the Hurricanes. Coincidentally, Matt Cullen was the player who scored the winning shootout goal for the Rangers.
The Canes have not won any games that went into shootouts this entire year.
The game was well played, I thought. I thought the Canes had a bit of an edge in the second - the other periods seemed even.
Cam Ward left the game in the second period with a laceration above his left knee. He got 11 stitches according to the NBC guys. (I actually liked NBC's broadcast of the game... it didn't seem like they were favoring one team over the other for once.) John Grahame came in and played pretty good for having no warmup whatsoever. He made a few mistakes at the beginning - but none that turned into goals for New York, thankfully.

The next game is at home against the Florida Panthers.
And... for all of those who follow college basketball: the UNC Tar Heels won the ACC Tournament over NC State today. Go Heels!

Canes win - attributed to new hair color
Canes won 4-1 over Atlanta last night. This win puts the Canes into 7th place in the East, 1 point behind Atlanta, and 2 points behind Tampa Bay.
The Hurricanes looked pretty good in the game. They got out to a quick two-goal lead on goals by Justin Williams and Mike Commodore in the first period. Atlanta pulled within one on a shorthanded goal in the third, but, unlike the last time these two teams met, the Canes didn't let them score at all after that. Justin Williams had another goal for the Canes 5 minutes later.
John Grahame had his second start in two nights, and didn't look too shabby. Williams, of course, played really good, and the new guy Anson Carter didn't look that bad, playing a total of 19:01 on Eric Staal's line.
Frankly, I'm just happy that they won in their division, but the fact that they played good throughout is reassuring.
The trade wire is already heating up, the same Thrashers acquiring Keith Tkachuk from the Blues for Glen Metropolit and several other draft picks. They also got Alexei Zhitnik from Philadelphia for a prospect. I expect more trades to occur, as the trade deadline is this Tuesday.
In absolutely random news, I dyed my hair "rich auburn blonde" (Garnier Nutrisse #76) yesterday. Turned out pretty decent, red but not too red and not orange, thankfully. I wanted it a little more blonde-er, but it looks good. Just enough red to make it look unnatural, but not so unnatural. I attribute the win to the change in hair color, just as I attribute the Canes 0-2 start in the series against Montreal last year to me dying my hair startling red.

West wins All-Star Game
The West All-Stars beat the East All-Stars 12-9 last night.
The East was doing pretty okay in the first, tied after one. Then Martin Brodeur let in 6 goals on 16 shots, and it was over.
The Canes All-Stars did pretty good, both Staal and Williams got goals in this one. That's more than Sidney Crosby can say, being shutout in this game.
It makes me laugh on the inside that our two Stars did better than Crosby and Ovechkin combined.
Anyways, that's about it for today. The All-Star Game was nice to watch - but it'll sure be nice to see some bodychecks again.

All-Star stuffs
Well, I did manage to watch most of the All-Star festivities last night.
First of all, the East Youngstars beat the West Youngstars 9-8. Interesting to watch, as the game was all 4-on-4 offense. I felt sorry for the goalies, though, seeing as they faced a lot of shots and got no defense in front of them whatsoever.
Then came the skills competiton. This part was kind of cool to watch, because you realize that if you were out there trying this stuff, you'd probably hurt yourself.
Eric Staal started the Canes representation off with a 4th place in the Fastest Skater contest with a time of 14:50.
Then, he was denied a goal in the shootout competition by Marty Turco. (What else is new?)
Justin Williams scored a goal on his shot. (Why can't he come through in the regular season? The Hurricanes are 0-for-4 in the shootout, and I think that those games count a lot more than the All-Star Game.)
Eric Staal then knocked down 4 targets in 5 shots in the Accuracy competition (tied for first).
Then... well, I stopped watching after that, but the East won 15-11.
The All-Star Game is tonight. Thankfully it doesn't count for home-field advantage in the playoffs like some lesser sports.
