A quick briefing on the Canes finishing out the month of January before we go into ultimate All-Star mode here.
Over the past two weeks the Canes went 3-3, leaving them at 25-19-6 on the season. Still 9th in the Conference and 4th in the Southeast. Still one point behind Atlanta for the last playoff spot. No, I did not copy and paste this from the last weekly recap, things just haven't changed much standings-wise.
Things have changed since my All-Star preview. There's been a lot of people dropping out because of injuries and whatnot, Sidney Crosby being one of the offenders. But bad luck for some is good luck for Jeff Skinner and Jamie McBain - Skinner was bumped up from the rookie only team to the regular All-Stars, and Jamie McBain was added to the rookie squad. The Canes are definitely well represented now - and I think I might change my team allegiances from "Team Staal" to "Team Skinner".
The All-Star festivities begin tomorrow! I cannot wait!

Pure unadulterated awesome
So I've tried to write a good intro for this post at least six different times now and I can't manage to do it. How can I, a lowly hockey blogger, begin to describe the sheer awesomeness that was the USA-Canada gold medal game?
It's not even hyperbole when I say that this was one of the best hockey games I have seen. One for the ages. Those who tuned in just for the Olympic game, as much as the NHL needs your viewership you might as well stop watching. You're not going to see another game like this for years.
I mean, it is scripted like it was some kind of Disney sports movie. Favored home team that was beaten early in the tournament is rematched with the same opponent again for the final game. The bulk of the game is close - nothing like the blowouts either team had previously put up in the tournament. Just when it looks like Canada is going to win it, Zach Parise ties it up with 24 seconds left to send it into overtime. Overtime is again well fought by both teams, but the winning goal is knocked in by the superstar Sidney Crosby.
I mean, seriously. If this was a movie script at that point the producer would step away and shake his head. There's no way that, in reality, the superstar would score the goal to bring the gold medal to his home country on home ice, right? That's just too cheesy, too unbelievable.
But it happened. Sidney Crosby is proving that he is all that he's cracked up to be. Canada takes home the gold, winning the game 3-2.
This is by no means a defeat for the Americans. This is a team who no one thought would be in this position - no one thought they would have beaten Canada once, let alone have won all of their games in the Olympics except for this one. Winning a silver sucks, but at the same time it is an accomplishment that should not be easily tossed aside.
This game was pure, unadulterated awesome. This game pretty much summed up everything that every hockey fan loves about the game. If you think that hockey is confined to be a niche sport, please please watch this game again. There is no way that any sports fan, any person couldn't feel the enjoyment of watching this game. The fun of watching, of cheering, is what has spawned crazily loyal hockey fans like myself.
And, hey, uh, the Canes play the Leafs tomorrow. So maybe watch or listen or something? I promise, it'll be just like the gold medal game - it'll be two teams fighting to the death on ice for... the number one draft pick.

Olympic Update
The first week of the Olympics has passed, and there has definitely been some exciting hockey to watch.
First and foremost, of course, is Team USA, which beat Switzerland 3-1 on Monday. They then beat Norway 6-1 on Wednesday. Tim Gleason unfortunately didn't make it on the scoresheet at all.
The interesting games so far have been the same Swiss team which USA beat forcing Canada into overtime and a shootout, although ultimately losing 3-2. Sidney Crosby scored the winning shootout attempt, although it is obviously that any team can be carried by a hot goaltender - Jonas Hiller obviously held his own extremely well.
Another team who ran into a hot goaltender was the favorite Team Russia - they lost to Slovakia and Jaroslav Halak 2-1 in another shootout.
Let's just say that either of these teams having trouble in these rounds is extremely surprising, as they were both expected to be head and shoulders above anyone else.
For Caniacs, Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen both scored goals in the 5-0 Finnish victory over Germany. Pitkanen also had a point in the 5-1 win over Belarus. Eric Staal made it on the Team Canada scoresheet in the 8-0 victory over Norway.

Pathetic.
For the love of all things good in the world, can we at least try to stop Evgeni Malkin?
Canes lost 6-2 and are now down 3-0 in the series.
Seriously, the only good thing about this game was the fact that I was able to snap a picture of Don Cherry and not have my camera break.
So, maybe you can't see the features very well - who else could pull off a jacket like that?
This game was just miserable to watch and is now even more miserable to recall. Every time I think of the goals scored by the Pens in rapid succession (in both the first and third periods) I just want to take my keyboard and slam it against the wall.
Game 4 is Tuesday. Canes play like this again and the season's over. Period. End of story.

The major storylines
A lot to talk about on this Monday, the start of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Firstly, the series-winning goal by Scott Walker got a lot more significant, considering he announced that his wife had been recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. From the N&O article:
On a much more happier note, the Canes-Penguins series begins tonight! Let me tell you ahead of time what the Versus coverage will consist of (enabling you to put the TV on mute and instead listen to Chuck K):
- OMG! Sidney Crosby is in this game! Let me repeat that again - SIDNEY CROSBY IS IN THIS GAME! And guess who he beat in the last round? ALEXANDER OVECHKIN! Sidney Crosby had 8 goals in that series! SID CROSBY SCORED 13 POINTS IN A SERIES AGAINST AO! SIDNEY CROSBY!!!!!!!!
- Hey! There are two guys named Staal in this series! Isn't that wierd? And, get this, they're brothers! Wow, that's like the first time that's happened in like, ever! And, get this, they have two other brothers that play hockey! It's like, a whole family of hockey players! That's like a completely new concept!
- Remember that guy Erik Cole? You know the guy who checked him from behind? He's on the Penguins! And Cole's on the Hurricanes! And they're going to play at Mellon Arena, where Cole got hit! Wow, it's like they've never faced off against each other!
I think the most pathetic thing is that all of these subplots have been covered when these teams have played in the regular season (I should know, I've yammered on about them enough)- it's just all of a sudden they've been blown out of proportion because it's the playoffs - but you would think there would be new material for the playoffs, not just the same old storyline. But I guess that's too much to ask.

I'm hungry for a win. And Primanti Bros sandwich.
Canes lost in a pathetic attempt against Pittsburgh 4-1.
Now, granted, the whole game wasn't pathetic. The first period was good, the second period was the start of the decline, and the third period was a crash-and-burn-in-a-huge-mushroom-cloud sort of affair.
Kicking off the good part of the game was LaCouture mixing it up with Paul Bissonnette. And by "mixing it up" I mean getting his butt kicked. But it still was a way to get fired up at the beginning of the game.
Then Brandon Sutter got his first NHL goal off of a Brooks Orpik turnover (yes, it felt good to see Orpik look as inept as, well, our defense does...).
The second period, instead of building upon the success of the first period, the Canes just kind of skated around in circles, not actually doing anything. (Brookbank did make up for the rather lame fight in the first by getting some good shots in on Eric Godard).
Then came the third period, where the Canes just completely imploded. It started with Crosby tipping in a Malkin power play shot, and then 32 seconds later Fedotenko just waltzed through our defense and the game was 2-1.
Note to Canes: A one-goal game is NOT a comfortable lead.
Then I don't even remember the third goal, but it wasn't unexpected because the momentum was completely in the direction of Pittsburgh. And then an empty net goal was the dagger in the heart.
So, in summary, the Canes completely blew the game, not pressing offensively when they needed to and resembling Swiss cheese when they needed some defense, leaving me with a gaping hole of patheticness and a huge craving for a Primanti Bros sandwich. (Delicious sandwich... if anyone is ever anywhere near Pittsburgh, they must get one.)
Jeez, I feel like a broken record. It seems like every single game I'm begging the Canes to play a full 60 minutes. And y'know what? They never do! And y'know what? It makes them play like crap and lose!
So, please, Canes, please, actually put forth an effort in the 60 minutes against the Islanders, okay?

Oh joy...
Wow... A Penguins v. Red Wings final. Just peachy.
Must one of them win? Can't we, y'know, call it a tie?
No?
Darn.
Well, with much reluctance, I'm rooting for the Pens in this one. I mean, come on, who wants to see Detroit win another? Not that seeing Sid Crosby or *twitch* Brooks Orpik *twitch* lift the Cup would make me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside - more like I just ate a semi-bad carrot. Has a nasty taste, but is definitely more appealing than the moldy PB&J I kept in my lunchbox over Spring Break.
Um... I hope you're not eating right now...
As for who I predict to win... Both teams have been on fire recently. I mean Pittsburgh lost, what, 2 games this whole playoff run? But, I'm not liking any team with the Rebound King, Marc-Andre Fleury, in net.
So I don't predict anybody to win. Because I'm just on the fence like that.

Canes lose to Florida. Boo!
Canes lost last night 5-4 to Florida.
I saw only the third period, as I was doing some Christmas shopping last night. Apparently the Canes were up 3-1 at the end of the first, but let Florida tie it up in the second.
In the part I watched, Florida scored a goal right in front, then Whitney scored off of a nice Erik Cole pass from the boards 29 seconds later. The Canes seemed like they were playing well, but then Florida got another goal, and that was the one that won the game.
The bad news for this one is twofold. The Canes now only lead Florida in the division standings by 3 points. And Justin Williams went out in the first period with a knee injury. From the N&O:

Meanwhile, in the "surprising news that I learned from SportsCenter this morning" category there are two items.
One: Duke lost to Pittsburgh!
Two: Sid Crosby had a Gordie Howe hat trick last night against Boston. Which is weird, because he certainly didn't seem like a fighter to me. But he did a pretty good number on the Boston dude.
Next Canes game is against the Lightning on Saturday.

Awesome - and then not awesome
Two games played this weekend - played by two teams.
Well, at least it looked like two different teams out on the ice...
First game, against the Penguins was an awesome 4-1 win that was solidly played. Cam Ward should've definitely had a shutout in that one, the Pens goal coming with only 3:23 left in the game on a 5-on-3.
Canes managed to shut down Crosby completely, and made Marc-Andre Fleury, the goalie, look like absolute crap, with his rebounds flying out everywhere.
And - guess what? - I got to boo Brooks Orpik. I think that alone makes it an awesome game.
Sadly, I can't say the same for the 2-0 loss against Washington. The Canes came out slow (2 shots in the first period) and didn't ever get their legs under them. The only thing that kept them even remotely in the game was John Grahame.
The good game that I did watch on Saturday was the Philadelphia-Edmonton game, thanks to the free preview of the Center Ice package. Really hilarious to see Mike Knuble score an own goal. It's probably good that I don't have the package all the time - I'd be staying up waaay past my bedtime to watch west coast hockey games...

Canes play Pens!
Canes play Pittsburgh tonight!
I just love going to these games. Not only to I get to boo the despised one, but they're always great, high-paced games. And it's always nice to see the Canes shut down the Pens young core, including Sid Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal. (er... knock on wood...) And there's the subplot with the Staal brothers fighting it out for family pride.
The lame news today? Apparently, according to the N&O, Erik Cole's goal has disappeared:

Canes announced their preseason schedule yesterday. Here it is:

Sept. 28 - Home v. Columbus
Due to the coinciding Caniac Carnival, admission to the September 16th game will be free!
An interesting note: Sidney Crosby was signed to a five year extension by the Penguins today. Deal is estimated to be worth $45 mil (~$9 mil per year).
Believe it or not, he's probably not getting overpaid in that contract.

Erik Cole assists and Sid Crosby propaganda
Erik Cole got an assist in the Team USA Exhibition win over Sweden!
In less-awesome news, I watched the Sabres beat up the Rangers last night. It was painful because I want the Avery/Jagr tandem to fail miserably... but I don't want Buffalo to win. Every goal is like another pointy object stabbed into my arm - it won't kill me, but it hurts a lot.
Anaheim also beat Vancouver.

In less-awesome news, I watched the Sabres beat up the Rangers last night. It was painful because I want the Avery/Jagr tandem to fail miserably... but I don't want Buffalo to win. Every goal is like another pointy object stabbed into my arm - it won't kill me, but it hurts a lot.
Anaheim also beat Vancouver.

Me: Basketball?
Eric: Yeah, the NBA playoffs.
Me: NBA? How about the N-H-L?
Eric: ...
Me: The National Hockey League...?
Eric: Oh, right. I know Sidney Crosby is the best... and that's about it.
