The past two weeks were pretty kind to the Canes - in the six games since my last post, Carolina went 4-1-1. Yes, that means that finally the Canes have had a win streak and managed to get above .500 on the season.
Let's recap:
- Canes lost to the Stars 2-1 in a shootout. No one scored in the SO for the Canes.
- In their next game the Canes were finally victorious in the shootout, winning 2-1 over the Blues. Jussi Jokinen scored the only goal in the shootout.
- Canes won 4-3 over the Panthers in a come-from-behind victory. They had gone down three goals early in the game - Ward was pulled from goal after letting two goals in the first two minutes. But, for probably the first time this season, they didn't give up and they powered back for the victory in regulation.
- The Canes also came from behind the next night, winning 3-2 in a shootout over the Atlanta Thrashers. Cam Ward was a complete beast in this one, stopping 45 shots on the night.
I actually watched the game against the Ducks (finals are over, haha!), and I think that the 4-2 win was entertaining enough to earn its own bulleted section of the post. So, my observations:
- The end of the game was INSANE. Yeah, that's the only word that even begins to describe what happened. Three successive penalties called against the Canes resulting in a full two minute six-on-three that the Canes had to kill off. Yes, that's six-on-three due to the fact that Anaheim pulled their goalie. First time in a long time that I've been on the edge of my seat to watch any sort of hockey that the Canes have played. Cam Ward was absolutely stellar to keep the Ducks from scoring more than one.
- Speaking of Ward, he looked amazing. AMAZING. If he can keep up this kind of play, the Canes definitely have a chance for the playoffs. He is a top-notch goalie and he definitely showed all of his skill in this game.
- As for the penalties called to put Cam Ward in the position to have to make those saves... Joe Corvo pretty much lost his mind going after Corey Perry (although he deserved it, but let's just say that Corvo has to be a little less blatant in roughing next time if he doesn't want to get called). Brandon Sutter I guess closed his hand on the puck - debatable, but I'll give the ref credit. Eric Staal's crosscheck, however, was nonexistent. Definitely absurd that the refs should call something like that when a team is already down two men. Talk about trying to decide the game.
- I loved that Corvo went after Perry after he scored the empty netter. Not so happy that Perry started something because his team lost, but I'm glad that Corvo stuck up for himself and didn't just take the crap.
- Eric Staal had a natural hat trick. Yeah, kind of an afterthought after the excitement at the end. But his first goal particularly was a beauty - Staal just took the puck straight up the side during a powerplay - a very pretty goal, although I'm sure the nonexistent Anaheim defense would think otherwise.
So, with this win, the Canes had a four game win streak. That ended pretty ignominiously with a 5-1 loss to the Lightning tonight. Let's just say I'm not crying that this one wasn't televised.
So where does this leave the Canes? They currently have a 15-13-4 record and 34 points on the year, good enough for 9th in the East and 4th in the Southeast. So, if you're keeping track, same as it was last post. The good news, or at least, what could be good news in the future - the C[r]apitals no longer have a stranglehold on the division. Thanks to their recent struggles, they are actually third in the Southeast. In our position it probably doesn't mean much - we're eight points behind them - but hopefully the Canes will continue to win and take advantage of our rival's poor play.
Upcoming this week is Montreal, who is leading their division, and the aforementioned C[r]apitals. I'm hoping for a continuation of the good play of the past two weeks - hey, the Penguins recently went on a twelve game tear, why can't the Canes do the same?

Canes lose another two. Whatever.
Well, a little less than a week has passed, and we can chalk up two more losses on the road. Ho-hum, same old, same old.
The first loss was 2-0 against the Stars on Monday. Didn't listen to the game, so I don't know really much about it. Recap says that a Ray Whitney goal was called back due to the fact it was kicked over or something like that. Biggest (and worst) news of the night was the fact that Tuomo Ruutu went out with an injury, adding another player to the growing list of Canes casualties on the season.
The second loss was last night against the Ducks where the Canes lost 3-2. Eric Staal came off of the IR for this one, and he played pretty well, getting an assist in the third period.
I thought that the Canes played pretty well. Besides for some rough patches in the first period, they actually played solid hockey for once (or the Ducks were looking pretty poor... whatever). Tom Kostopoulos scored a very nice goal off due to the fact that he was square in front of the net with no one around him when Ray Whitney tossed it to him.
Unfortunately, the Canes broke down as they always seem to, allowing a goal at the very end of the second period to let Anaheim tie it up. Then came two in the third, including a game-breaker with a minute thirty left. Brandon Sutter managed to score thirty seconds later, but it wasn't enough for the Canes to win.
I'm not quite as angry at these losses as I was during the losing streak probably because I've accepted the fact that this current Canes team tends to lose a lot, and they're currently playing better while still losing.
Maybe if we get some more people healthy it'll continue to improve. Maybe winning one on the road? But that might be too much to ask. We'll have to wait to see if the Canes can pull that off, as the next game is a bout with the Thrashers tomorrow at the RBC Center.

Thanksgiving was not very kind to the Canes record
Soooo... The Canes went 1-3 over my Thanksgiving break... Not very good.
First, the Canes lost to Florida 3-2.
Then they lost to Philadelphia 3-1 (while wearing their third jerseys... making them 2-2 on the season with them... I'm not exactly sure why I'm continuing that stat, other than now that I've started, I certainly can't stop...)
Then they won in Philly 3-2 in overtime. I saw the first period of that game (while eating a delicious cheesesteak), which was merely an okay showing by the Canes. I also saw Wade Brookbank's fight, which was an excellent fight to watch, the referees letting them go at it for quite a bit. Don't think either one won the fight, though.
Sergei Samsonov scored in the overtime period.
Finally, they lost 4-1 to the Ducks yesterday. About the time of puck drop I was lamenting the Washington Redskins' slow shuttle system to take us back to our parking spot all the way on the other side of I-495. Yep, I went the Giants-Redskins game on the way back from Pennsylvania - froze my butt off in the stupid mist, too (although my six layers of clothing did keep me moderately warm...)
Anyways... Canes lost Cam Ward to a groin injury in that Ducks game - he'll be out for the next three games and Justin Peters will be called up to back up Leighton.
Good news on the injury front (unexpected news as well) is that Justin Williams of all people will more than likely be back on the ice sometime this week. And this is after busting his Achilles' tendon in training camp. ("Busting" being the proper medical term in cases such as these.) Good news - we could definitely use him out on the ice. I just hope he doesn't get injured from coming back too fast.
Next game is on Thursday against Pittsburgh.

Canes do okay over the weekend
Canes did okay this weekend, dropping one in overtime to the Kings and winning one over the Ducks.
And, despite having seen highlights or actual parts of each game, I can't remember anything about either game.
Except that Cam continued to look sort of shaky on some of the Kings goals, and the Canes seemed to completely lose it in the second period against the Ducks.
Oh, and Kaberle went out of the Kings game with some sort of leg injury... yes, we have yet another injury...
Next game is back on the East Coast, against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Anaheim has won it all...
The Canes are no longer the reigning Stanley Cup Champions.
The Anaheim Ducks have won Lord Stanley's Cup, after a 5 game series with Ottawa.
The Ducks won 6-2. The Senators didn't play very well (or at least, they didn't play well consistently), but the Ray Emery own-goal definitely didn't help their cause.
And, I think I know why the Senators were doomed to lose. Yeah... Daniel Alfredsson touched the Prince of Wales trophy. And you Caniacs who saw the Canes do the exact same thing in 2001-02 know exactly what I'm talking about. I remember seeing the picture of him holding the trophy! on NHL.com and thinking "Wow... that's not a good sign."
For those who don't know, it's a superstition that you don't touch the conference trophy until you won the Stanley Cup. Otherwise, you're not going to win the Cup.
*sigh* Well, there's always next season!

Come on Ottawa! We want a Game 6!
Today Anaheim could win the Cup.
On Monday, they won 3-2 over the Senators. The first period of this game was absolutely Ottawa's game, holding the Ducks to only 2 shots.
Then, due to my massive headache, I fell asleep, only to wake up during the second of Anaheim's second period goals. I groggily stared at the TV, heard "two goals in a minute" and decided it was time to go to bed.
So, then I missed Daniel Alfredsson "shoot" the puck at Scott Niedermayer to end the second period. (YouTube footage!) Pretty class-less move by "Alfie".
Anyways... Ottawa needs to win, or this series will end at five.
(I think I do a pretty good job of stating the obvious.)

Cam Ward signs for 3!
Actual Canes news today! Cam Ward was signed to a three-year contract today! Next season he'll be paid 2 mil, 08-09 2.5 mil, and 09-10 he'll get 3.5 mil.
Does anyone happen to know the Canes salary cap status?
Anyways, Anaheim has pulled ahead 2-0 in their series for the big shiny silver trophy with a 1-0 win last night.
I only ended up watching the first two periods. (By "watching", I mean, having the TV on while I was studying Spanish vocabulary, studying Spanish verb conjugations, comleting a stupid Spanish study packet, finishing a Chemistry assignment, working on another Chemistry assignment, and debating who my Chemistry had to bribe to get awarded Teacher of the Year.)
In other words, I was only vaguely aware of the score.

Anaheim wins Game 1. Boooo!
Anaheim has taken the lead in the series after a 3-2 win over the Senators.
I personally managed to watch the first two periods. Ottawa got out early with an own goal by (I think, but I'm not too familiar with Anaheim) Sean O'Donnell. Anaheim then took control of the period and scored one of their own, holding Ottawa to only 3 shots in the 1st.
I honestly don't remember much about the second, only that someone on Ottawa scored to give them the lead.
Didn't see the third. Obviously, Anaheim scored two to win the game.
And Brad May is a goon. I can't remember why that particular item sticks in my mind, but it did, so there you go.
Next game's tomorrow.

Canada wins gold
Canada won the Gold Medal in the World Championships, being propelled forward by Cam Ward's win, Eric Staal's goal, and Justin William's assist.
Ottawa took a 2-0 lead in their series against Buffalo (Yes!) with a 4-3 win in 2OT Saturday night. It was the first time in their franchise history that they won both of the first two games in a series. The third game starts at 7pm tonight.
Anaheim tied Detroit in their series with a 4-3 win in one less period than the Ottawa game. (For those bad at math, that would be 1OT...)
That's it, really.

Conference Finals Predictions
Canada advances and the USA was eliminated today in the World Championships. Eric Staal had two assists in Canada's win, and Chad LaRose had an assist and Andrew Hutchinson had a goal in America's loss.
Today also begins the Conference Finals, with Buffalo and Ottawa playing their first game tonight.
Well, with the start of a new series, we all know that means... predictions!
Last ones didn't go so well for me - a 1-for-4, batting .250. If you remember correctly, I used a random number generator to pick the serieses as well - randomizer went 1-for-4 as well.
So... here we go... Remember, if I were putting money on the games - why the heck are you looking here for advice? - I would use the random.
#1 Buffalo Sabres v. #4 Ottawa Senators
I say: Ottawa in 7.
Random says: Buffalo in 5.
#1 Detroit Red Wings v. #2 Anaheim Ducks
I say: Crap... do I really have to pick? Can't they just both lose?... I suppose... Anaheim in 6.
Random says: Detroit in 6.
As for who I want to win, the answer would be none of them. But, the default is Ottawa because:
1) I hate Buffalo.
2) I hate the Red Wings.
3) I hate Buffalo.
4) I hate Chris Pronger.
5) I hate Buffalo.
6) I don't have a real problem with Ottawa.

Yes! False alarm!
Good news on the Erik Cole injury front! Mike Sundheim[the media relations guy]'s blog reports that Cole will playing in USA's game against Finland on Thursday, and that he is fine.

Stupid offseason.
Mike Commodore and Eric Staal got assists and Cam Ward got the win in Canada's win over Belarus.
Anaheim won, wrapping up their series with Vancouver.
Rangers and Buffalo play tonight, their series is tied 2-2.
Yep... nothing exciting... stupid offseason. And there's still numerous months to go... *sigh*

326th and Second Round Predictions
This is the 326th post of The Life and Times of a Caniac!!!! A momentus occasion, to be sure.
Sadly, there is no Canes news today. The second round starts tonight and, believe it or not, the Canes somehow missed the playoff exit, and the First-Round bypass, and are reported to be safely on the Offseason Road.
So... My first round predictions were okay, batting a whopping .429. This time, not only am I going to post my predictions, but also ones that come up when I use a random generator (the one that comes up first in the list is what the generator chooses). We'll see who wins! (I'd put my money on the random, if I was you...)
