Rod Brind'Amour has announced his retirement today.
From an on-the-ice only perspective, I'm glad to hear that he has retired. His play wasn't the same in the past two years and he wouldn't help the Canes get any younger.
From a nostalgic perspective, I feel a bit sad. Rod was the captain that led the Canes to the Stanley Cup, and for many years he was one of the main faces of the franchise. (One of the most recognizable faces as well...) He was a good two-way player who was clutch in the faceoff circle and known for his workouts off the ice. It's always a bummer to see the career of someone so integral to a team come to an end.
It seems, though, like this was the best way Rod could go out. He isn't forced to part ways with the Canes and seek out a contract with a different team. He repeated several times during his press conference how he loves the area and the people in it - retiring now allows him to remain with the organization where he can still be a part of the Canes "family".
So today is a melancholy sort of day for Caniacs - but I think that the future will be much better for it.

Summer Doldrums
Let's see, what has happened in the past week...
Tuomo Ruutu has opted to take the Canes to arbitration. Hopefully the Canes can come to a good resolution with him - I would hate to lose such a bruiser of a forward.
Recently, the Canes re-signed Casey Borer and Justin Peters to two-way contracts as well as Steven Goertzen from the Phoenix Coyotes.
And finally, today Joe Sakic announced his retirement after 20 seasons in the NHL.
Otherwise, not much has gone on in the hockey world. As always, I will update when anything earth-shattering occurs.
If there are any formatting errors in this post blame my Tablet PC, not me. I'm still getting used to this whole writing on the screen thing. (And the "I'm not going to recognize your handwriting on the first try" thing too). Along the same lines, if anyone has any tips for dealing with tablets, please leave a comment!

Random stuff
- Canes signed Dwyer, Flood & Jensen to one-year, two-way contracts. Which is good. I guess. Whatever.
- This whole Brett Favre thing makes me depressed beyond imagining. Thinking of him in a uniform other than the Green & Gold... well, I'm surprised they haven't put the whole state of Wisconsin under suicide watch. So what, you retired early. Go out on the top of your game, have everyone remember you for the greatness, not the mediocrity that will come with retiring too late.
- I'm so watching the VH1 Rock Honors The Who.
- Lecavalier signed a 11-year, $85 mil contract with the Lightning. Which means he'll be in the Southeast Division for his entire career. YaY. Not.
- You realize you can get 21,250,000 gallons of gas at $4 a gallon for $85 mil?
- The picture to the left scares the crap out of me. Why? Because it is getting increasingly hard to uphold my vow to never ever ever get a social networking account. Everyone and everything I know is saying "Be my friend on Myspace" or "Check out my Facebook". Y'know what? No. NO! I will never conform!

Stupid Red Wings
Well, if today is any indicator, summer is going to be a real biznitch around here. Right now it is 95ºF, feels like 99º... and it doesn't look like it's going to get any cooler anytime soon. And what is it, June 5th? Wow... better than the cold in my book, though.
So, yesterday, the Canes resigned Patrick Eaves to a three year deal which gets him an average of $1.4 mil a year. Seems like a pretty good deal to me, seeing as he's in the beginning of his career now. And I was totally going to post this yesterday, but I got sidetracked by my new cell phone arriving (It's pink! And shiny!), which also means I missed Game 6, which gave the Red Wings their trillionth Stanley Cup in 10 years, or whatever stat they keep spouting. Just one Cup is too many for them, in my opinion, but... *sigh* I guess there's always next year.
Speaking of next year, Glen Wesley won't be on the team. He announced his retirement today. Which is sort of a shame, because he's been with the Whalers/Canes for what seems to be forever, and I know I will definitely look twice when I don't see him out there. I think it's great, though, that he had such a long career and was finally able to top it off with a Stanley Cup.
That being said - to all you Canes personnel out there - I have one word for you: DEFENSEMAN. We need a good, solid, trustworthy, not old, not small, possibly goal-scoring defenseman. That is my solemn offseason wish. That, and you don't trade anyone I like for said defenseman.

Overtime, retirement, and firings
So apparently I missed a pretty good game last night. Game 3 went into triple OT, after the Pens scored two in the first, let in three consecutive and were ~35 seconds away from watching the Red Wings lift the Cup when Maxime Talbot saved the day. Then Petr Sykora won it in triple overtime.
But, I wasn't watching (didn't want to see the Red Wings win, as the Pens performance on Saturday didn't leave me with a lot of hope), and I wouldn't have stayed up for it anyways.
This game does increase the probability of me tuning in tomorrow, but considering all the games I've watched the Pens have lost, and all I haven't they've won...
In other news: Sami Kapanen, the Cane from long ago, has announced his retirement today. He was a fast little skater, and was a part of that special season of 2001-2002.
John Tortorella will not be coaching Tampa Bay next year, being canned from the job today. I'm happy because I thought he was a little arrogant and I didn't like his coaching style - but that happiness depends on the Lightning hiring someone that will enable the Canes to win. Not that having only one line on their won't help with that, it just is beneficial to the Hurricanes if the Lightning can pick up someone moronic.
And rumors are that Barry Melrose, the guy known to me as the ESPN hockey analyst that wears pinstriped suits and gets very little face time since the network dropped hockey games, will be taking the job. Which sounds weird because it doesn't look like he's coached in the last ten years, but it's just a rumor... But, hey, if he makes his team lose to the Canes, I'm all for it.
Which, now that I think about it, is pretty much my outlook on anything that happens in the NHL. Don't steal my players, don't beat my team, anything else is cool. And, if you can hurt Buffalo in any way, that's doubly fine.
Onwards to Game 6!
