This team just can't make up it's mind, can it?
Last post I was talking about how crappy the Canes were looking, and how I didn't really think that the playoffs were possible. Right now they're ONE POINT behind the Rangers who are in eighth, and two behind Buffalo, all three teams with four games left to play. And OBTW, the Canes play Buffalo tomorrow.
And, they actually seem to be playing pretty well. I was able to watch part of the Washington game this Tuesday and the Canes definitely had a bit more pep in their skate than they had previously. Not to mention - they've gone 6-1 in their past seven games.
The question, of course being, is this a case of too little too late? It's nice, I suppose, that the Hurricanes aren't giving up on their season and sitting back - but I can't help that feel that play like this would have helped had they started it a week or two earlier. The chance is still there for a playoff spot, but the fact still remains that the Canes are on the outside looking in and have to both play amazingly and get help from some of the other teams. (Check out Sports Club Stats for a nice breakdown of the percentages.)
Obviously the game tomorrow against Buffalo is key. All of the remaining games are must-wins, but it would seem that the Sabres game is the must-win of the must-wins. If they can't win this one, well, they probably don't deserve to be in the playoffs anyways - a playoff team needs to be able to deliver under pressure, after all.
Is it too much to ask to not be on the bubble one year? Like, just decide that you're going to tank or win at the beginning of the season and stick with it. This is far too much uncertainty at the end of the season for my liking.
Season ends in four games... at the end of this week we'll see if the Canes are going to play more games than that.

Weekly Recap - Canes apparently can't score at home
Yesterday was the end of the first month of hockey (perhaps the only good thing of fall, in my opinion - temperatures really shouldn't ever go below 70). October has left the Canes at an even .500, 10th in the East and 4th in the Southeast Division with ten points. In other words, leaps and bounds above last year (do you sense a theme this year?), but overall not spectacular.
This past week we saw the Canes first two games at the RBC Center, and, uh, let's just say that it may not be a bad thing that tonight's game is on the road against Philadelphia. Goose eggs were lain in both the opener against the C[r]apitals and Saturday's game against the Penguins.
Perhaps the Washington game wasn't as bad as the 3-0 score would allow you to believe - I was able to view it thanks to living in C[r]apital country. The first goal was kind of a fluke, Cam Ward being run over outside the crease (and, yes, unfortunately he was outside of the crease, resulting in no goalie interference). Niklas Backstrom put Washington up by two just over midway into the third and then sealed the game with an empty net goal. Michal Neuvirth also looked really good for being Washington's fourth goalie or some similar absurd number.
However, while the game was closer than the score would indicate, I didn't really see anything to write home about from a Canes' perspective. Jeff Skinner continues to impress, but not much else really stood out. Pretty lackluster for a home opener performance, to be honest.
Speaking of Jeff Skinner, he really broke out in Friday's game against the Rangers. Skinner scored two goals and had an assist on Erik Cole's game winner. He seems to be a player that whenever he's on the ice he does something noticeably beneficial to the team (Granted, I've watched all of two games, but the point still remains that this guy looks to be a beast).
Finally, to wrap up the week, the Canes lost by another 3-0 tally at home to Pittsburgh. Let's just say that our current 0-2 home record is not really thrilling this Caniac right now. Yes, it is extremely early in the season, but I, and I think most of the Caniac Nation, would prefer the Canes to not become a road-only team. Especially when I think back to the season we won the Cup - let's just say that the 31-8-2 home record definitely helped. But I think that might be reading way too far into things.
But attempts to improve the home record (or, heck, score a goal at home) will have to wait until Wednesday against the Islanders. Tonight the Canes face Philly away - a Daniel Briere-less Flyers team as Briere was suspended three games for cross-checking an Islanders players straight in the mouth. Look at the YouTube video if you, like me, love to dislike Briere (and Carcillo as well). Hopefully the Canes can stay away from any Flyers thuggery and continue with their good away record.

The major storylines
A lot to talk about on this Monday, the start of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Firstly, the series-winning goal by Scott Walker got a lot more significant, considering he announced that his wife had been recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. From the N&O article:
On a much more happier note, the Canes-Penguins series begins tonight! Let me tell you ahead of time what the Versus coverage will consist of (enabling you to put the TV on mute and instead listen to Chuck K):
- OMG! Sidney Crosby is in this game! Let me repeat that again - SIDNEY CROSBY IS IN THIS GAME! And guess who he beat in the last round? ALEXANDER OVECHKIN! Sidney Crosby had 8 goals in that series! SID CROSBY SCORED 13 POINTS IN A SERIES AGAINST AO! SIDNEY CROSBY!!!!!!!!
- Hey! There are two guys named Staal in this series! Isn't that wierd? And, get this, they're brothers! Wow, that's like the first time that's happened in like, ever! And, get this, they have two other brothers that play hockey! It's like, a whole family of hockey players! That's like a completely new concept!
- Remember that guy Erik Cole? You know the guy who checked him from behind? He's on the Penguins! And Cole's on the Hurricanes! And they're going to play at Mellon Arena, where Cole got hit! Wow, it's like they've never faced off against each other!
I think the most pathetic thing is that all of these subplots have been covered when these teams have played in the regular season (I should know, I've yammered on about them enough)- it's just all of a sudden they've been blown out of proportion because it's the playoffs - but you would think there would be new material for the playoffs, not just the same old storyline. But I guess that's too much to ask.

Another Game 7
Well, this sucks.
Canes lost 4-2 in Game 6. They came out slow in the first period, allowing Boston to score two in the first five minutes. They never recovered.
And now we have a Game 7 for the priviledge to advance on to play the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won their own Game 7 last night.
I don't even know what to think about this Canes team anymore. They had Boston where they wanted them - ready to eliminate in five games - and here we are, at Game 7 after two poorly played games.
Can the Canes win this? Of course they can. Will they show the fire and passion that they had in Games 2-4? That is the question.
Puck drops at the random time of 8:00. Watch it!

Onwards to Boston!
So the second round starts tomorrow and the Canes are going up against the #1 seed, the Boston Bruins. Looking at this matchup, let's just say that I was hoping for a New York Rangers win so we would play Pittsburgh in this round. But the Rangers crapped out in the last three games so here we are.
Yeah, Boston totally kicked our butt during the regular season. They swept all four games and none of them were exactly close games (Two games were 4-2 losses, the others by a margin of 5-1).
Of course, we haven't played the Bruins since February, and the Canes are certainly a changed team since then. For one, the Canes hadn't gone on their crazy-long winning streak at that point (obviously). And, after watching the series against Jersey, you can't tell me that the Canes don't have the "intestinal fortitude"† to beat a team like Boston.
Boston, like Jersey, has an insanely good goalie (although perhaps without the starpower of Brodeur) in Tim Thomas. Dude was in the top of the league in the goaltender stats for pretty much the entire season. I predict that Cam Ward will have to outplay him just as he outplayed Brodeur in the last series.
This, I think, is going to be a majorly tough series. Boston is extremely good and they definitely didn't show and weaknesses in the series against Montreal. But as long as the Canes play as well as they did in the Jersey series (excluding poor showings in Games 1, 3, and everything except the two minutes of 7) they should have a chance of winning games. Winning four? Well, that'll be difficult considering the opponent. But it's definitely possible.

And, I would like to say that I hope, no matter what happens, that the games in this series are better than the games in the Penguins-C[r]apitals series, just to prove to the mainstream media that good hockey can be played without Alex Ovechkin or Sidney Crosby. (Personally, I think it would be hilarious if they both got injured and couldn't play, if only to see the whole star-studded promo fall apart and the commentators actually have to talk about the game for once.)

† Repeated phrases like this is why I love Tripp Tracy. In case you didn't watch Game 7, I think he said this about 10 times in the third period.

Playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?
The Canes can clinch a playoff spot by winning tonight against the Penguins! This is so excellent, because that means the Canes can bomb the rest of their games and still make it into the playoffs! (Think bombing all of the final games is impossible? Please refer back to last year.)
And the game is against Pittsburgh, which pretty much guarantees a fun game to watch. And the weather is beautiful, so it's perfect for tailgating! YaY! April with playoffs in sight is so exciting!
But let's go back to the 4-2 win against the Rangers, hm? I must, of course, begin this recap with the obligatory: Sean Avery is a punk! Seriously, that dude has issues. It was a good thing that most of the Canes didn't put up with his crap and didn't shy away from hitting the punk. Joe Corvo I especially remember giving Avery some of his own medicine.
That being said, there were so many uncalled penalties! Don Koharski is pretty much the worst ref in the league - clutching, grabbing, blatant interference - and none of it was called! (Or, rather, the marginal stuff was called against the Canes, but the obvious stuff was never called.)
Although, I guess it did contribute to the playoff atmosphere - not very many calls are made in playoff games (or has that changed? It's been so long since we played in the postseason...). Also, the fans at the RBC Center certainly made it a playoff atmosphere - after Rod Brind'Amour scored, the building seemed about to burst it was so loud. Definitely decibel levels that hadn't been seen since the spring of '06.
Speaking of goals, Chad LaRose was absolutely electric in the game, notching two goals and seeming to always be in the right place at the right time. So awesome to see him score two!
Oh, and in reference to the post title - that is one of my favorite football ads, believe it or not. I think it's because of the quotability of it.

Cole is back tonight!
Erik Cole is back in a Canes jersey tonight!
I'm so looking forward to seeing him on the ice again!
And, seriously, if the line he gets put on clicks immediately, that will be absolutely frickin amazing. Just imagine what a Ruutu-Staal-Cole line could do!
In my zealous-ness to post on Wednesday, I completely forgot to post a game recap for Tuesday night's game. The Canes had a solid win over the C[r]apitals 5-2, of which I saw none because it was not on TV. But it was a win against a good team, so that definitely counts for something!
Canes are currently tied with Buffalo for ninth, although they technically get the tenth spot. So, obviously, it would be great if the Canes could win tonight against Calgary!

Canes lose, hopefully will win tonight
Canes lost 4-3 to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. Previously, the Canucks had lost nine straight at home, and eight straight in general.
*facepalm*
Well, it certainly looks like that wonderful win against Atlanta was a fluke. Granted, I didn't watch any of the game, but comments like these taken from the TSN.ca article don't make me feel warm and fuzzy about this game:
Oh boy. Yeah, I'm pretty glad that I was fast asleep when this game was on. I think a shorthanded goal against to lose the game would have put me in an absolutely horrible mood.
The real test, though, is tonight against San Jose, the leader of the Western Conference. If we can play with them and win (heck, normally I'd say just play with them, but that won't help us come April) then I feel that the Canes have a good shot. If we get steamrolled, I'm not going to be too optimistic about our playoff chances.
The Canes are going to be without Rod Brind'Amour in the game tonight. Apparently he came back to Raleigh because of "nagging lower body issues", and Jakub Petruzalek (best name ever!) was called up in his place. I'm not entirely sure that this is a bad thing, considering the captain's lame play pretty much the entire season.
Apparently, the Canes are also going to be going with Michael Leighton in goal tonight, a move I find somewhat peculiar, as Cam has started the last sixteen or so games. Why the change, and specifically, why the change against the best team in the West? Maybe they're looking for a change to spark the rest of the lineup. Whatever, I just hope it works out.

Thanksgiving annoys me
So... Canes are playing tonight, which I didn't know until about an hour ago, and Tim Gleason is apparently out with an injury sustained in the Canes 5-2 loss to Nashville. Which is another game that I didn't see because it wasn't on TV.
Apparently the Canes went down 4-0 after the first two periods, and only managed two goals of that particular comeback before Shea Weber made it 5-2. In other words, it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't see that game.
Anyways, I'll be missing a string of games, taking my yearly Thanksgiving trip to Pennsylvania. You would think I would have lucked out, considering the Canes are playing the Flyers both of the games I'll miss, so maybe I would be able to pick up the Flyers feed? Haha. My aunt only gets two public access channels. I can't even be saved from family by football! (Although, considering the Thanksgiving match up of Tennessee-Detroit, I don't think I'm missing much...)
So, yeah. So long until Monday, I guess...

That's life, I guess...
So, I'm pretty much not going to see about four Canes games in a row.
First one was Tuesday, which was not on TV, when the Canes lost in a shootout 3-2 to the Canadiens. Apparently we're still horrendous at the shootout, not scoring a goal in the shootout.
The second one will (probably) be tonight against the Blues both because it's starts at 8:30 and therefore will not be over before I fall asleep and because most of the night is set aside for dying my hair purple. (Don't hate because I have more school spirit than you...)
Then, the game that I'm the most angry about missing, is the Canes first game at home since mid-October. Yes, the Edmonton Oilers and the best power forward evah! are coming back to town... and I have to be in frickin' Pennsylvania for a 50th wedding anniversary party.
*kicks something*
And then, of course, we'll be driving back Sunday so I'll miss the Sunday Toronto game.
BTW, what is up with all of the Sunday games this month? Haven't these NHL schedulers ever heard of the NFL? Because that's totally going to get people to watch hockey, putting it against the most popular sport in America...

Canes play Pens tomorrow
So the Canes play Pittsburgh tomorrow. The liklihood of me actually sitting down and watching that game is slim to none, as I have two tests and an essay due on Friday.
Which is a bummer, because Pittsburgh games always prove to be a fast-paced affair with a good amount of goals and action.
Anyways, I'm getting my blogging out now, so tomorrow I have one last thing to procrastinate with...
Canes sent Zack Boychuk down to his junior team. Boychuk played well in the last two games, but I think it's for the better that he gets another year in the juniors and recovers from his wrist surgery.
And, hopefully, we might see him around come playoff time...
That's it for now. Hopefully the Canes will win and not get any injuries at Mellon Arena tomorrow...

All-Star Break is over...
The Canes return from the All-Star break tonight against the Rangers.
I'd say the All-Star Game was successful for the Canes lone represenative - Staal had two goals and an assist in the East victory, enabling him to take home the game's MVP award - which includes a new car!
Hey, Eric - if you don't want the car, I'll take it off of your hands for you. Seriously, it'll be no problem.

SUGAR RUSH!
Man, I am sooooo hyper right now. Not only did I just get done with my last day of school until 2008 (YaY!) but I also had a pile of chocolate and Pixie Stix. Make me so psyched up for tonight's game against...
...Florida? Scratch that last part.
Actually, add that both Tanabe and LaRose somehow got concussed in the Toronto game, and suddenly the Florida game is impossible to get psyched for. (Frequent games + Injuries/sickness = LAME!)
Although, the team's Florida, and as long as we don't have Brad Watson to call diving penalties, it might not be too bad... (read: Canes win)
Then again, with the way the Canes are playing, who knows how the game will go?

Good news!
Good news for tomorrow's game against Philly!
Scott Walker, out with a torso injury since the October 19th Penguins game (a long time ago!), has been activated off of IR and will more than likely play! Great news that he'll be back in the lineup soon - the Canes have certainly missed his toughness that he adds to the game. (Especially good against Philly - it seems every week that another Flyer player is getting suspended for a cheap hit...)
Tomorrow is also Rod Brind'Amour figurine night! In the words of my mom: "Will it have the same beat-up nose as him?"

Canes play Pens!
Canes play Pittsburgh tonight!
I just love going to these games. Not only to I get to boo the despised one, but they're always great, high-paced games. And it's always nice to see the Canes shut down the Pens young core, including Sid Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal. (er... knock on wood...) And there's the subplot with the Staal brothers fighting it out for family pride.
The lame news today? Apparently, according to the N&O, Erik Cole's goal has disappeared:

The mood is... improved?
So... the Canes are out of the playoffs. The mood here at The Life and Times of a Caniac has lifted somewhat - still disappointed that the Canes didn't make the playoffs, but any day with hockey is better than one without. So, if all I have to watch is Otawa v. Pittsburgh or some other inane game that I normally wouldn't care about, it's better than having no inane game that I normally wouldn't care about to watch.
Lucky for me, the Canes still have back-to-back home games this weekend, so I can get my last fill of my favorite team before... September.
Yep, this weekend, the Canes have anounced Fan Appreciation Weekend. (i.e. Free Stufs Weekend!) I'll tell you, they better be appreciatin' us after we put our playoff hopes in them, and they just ripped our hearts into tiny little pieces, and then proceeded to stab each and every piece, and then they dumped the pieces out on I-40 and let all the cars and trucks run over them, and then they swept them up in the street cleaners and put them all in a bin and lit them on fire, and then put the ashes into a trash compactor, mashing up our playoff hopes until they were just dust in the wind.
*takes deep breath*
Maybe I'm not in that much of an improved mood...
Anyways, games against Atlanta and Florida to end the year.
Spring Break for me!

Canes lose pathetically; play again tonight
Canes lost to Toronto 6-1 last night.
I only watched the first period, in which Eric Staal scored the only goal of the night. After that, the team was sloppy and had tons of turnovers. Something tells me that I didn't miss much...
With this pathetic loss, the Canes are now in a three way tie for ninth. Yes, with 6 games left, the Canes are not in the top 8th of the Eastern Conference, and this particular Caniac is feeling a little nervous...
So, the Canes try to rebound tonight against the Flyers. The bad news is, that, even if they win, they'll still be in 9th, as they'll lose the tiebreakers with the teams two points ahead of them.
They definitely need the 2 points tonight.
*EDIT 1:50PM* A big thanks to CasonBlog for profiling me! I am now known as the President of the "American Erik Cole Glow Association of America"!!!!
Convieniently, I'm wearing my Erik Cole shirt today! Total awesomeness!

Canes play Toronto tonight.
Currently, Toronto is only two points behind us in the playoff race (we're still in 8th!), making this game magnified for both teams. Especially because all the other teams in the Eastern Conference playoff race are playing tonight.
Good news for those fighting with the Islanders for a spot (we're tied with them): Rick DiPietro, their goaltender, will be out indefinitely due to the effects of a concussion.
