Things haven't quite gone the Canes way the past two games.
Back before the Christmas break the Hurricanes lost 3-2 to Montreal, and last night they lost by the same score to the C[r]apitals. Both were games that the Canes could have won, and both featured questionable calls by the referees.
For the Montreal game, things were looking up when Erik Cole scored the second Canes goal of the night to put the team ahead by one. Then, nine seconds later, he hit Jaroslav Spacek from behind which earned a five-minute major boarding penalty - the Canadiens scored two goals on that powerplay and never looked back. I'm not entirely sure that the hit deserved a major penalty, but certainly the hit and the call cost the Canes the game.
For the Washington game, the questionable call came in the first period. Tim Gleason received a five minute major for charging and a game misconduct after a clean hit on Mathieu Perreault. It looked pretty rough in real time, but the replay obviously shows Gleason hitting with the shoulder pad, not the elbow... and definitely not charging across the ice for the hit. Looks like the refs were penalizing the amount of blood on the ice from Perreault's broken nose, not the actual play.
The penalty didn't have quite the obvious effect on the game that Cole's did, although I'm sure the Canes would have loved to have Gleason's services later in the game. My peeve for the game was the lackluster effort given in the last few minutes of the game - the Canes were only down by one and had ample opportunity to try for a goal, but it just didn't seem like they had the necessary jump in their step.
So, for those of you keeping track, yep, these two losses do mean that the Canes are back at .500 on the season, 10th in the East and 4th in the Southeast with 34 points. This three game losing streak essentially negates whatever had been gained by the four game winning streak, and the Canes are back where they started.
For me this is frustrating, because the past few games are the first good look I've had at the Canes this season - actually viewing them in action - and I have to say that they're not that bad of a team. They do have the talent to score, but apparently just can't get it done. They're light years ahead of how they looked last season... but if that only means a .500 record, how much better is that? It certainly isn't enough to gain them a playoffs spot, and if they can't make the playoffs, how different is that from last season?
Upcoming this week are back-to-back games in Toronto and Ottawa, then home against the Devils New Year's Day. Hopefully these are all easily beatable teams - if they're not, I will be doubting how serious a playoffs berth can be. However, beating the other bottom dwellers could signify the beginnings of a nice win streak - but hopefully my optimistic side isn't betraying me too much.

Olympic Update
The first week of the Olympics has passed, and there has definitely been some exciting hockey to watch.
First and foremost, of course, is Team USA, which beat Switzerland 3-1 on Monday. They then beat Norway 6-1 on Wednesday. Tim Gleason unfortunately didn't make it on the scoresheet at all.
The interesting games so far have been the same Swiss team which USA beat forcing Canada into overtime and a shootout, although ultimately losing 3-2. Sidney Crosby scored the winning shootout attempt, although it is obviously that any team can be carried by a hot goaltender - Jonas Hiller obviously held his own extremely well.
Another team who ran into a hot goaltender was the favorite Team Russia - they lost to Slovakia and Jaroslav Halak 2-1 in another shootout.
Let's just say that either of these teams having trouble in these rounds is extremely surprising, as they were both expected to be head and shoulders above anyone else.
For Caniacs, Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen both scored goals in the 5-0 Finnish victory over Germany. Pitkanen also had a point in the 5-1 win over Belarus. Eric Staal made it on the Team Canada scoresheet in the 8-0 victory over Norway.
Tomorrow is the game of games, USA v. Canada. Believe it or not, the USA is currently on top of the Group A standings, due to winning both of their games outright (the Olympic standings give 3 points for regulation wins and 2 for OT/SO wins). This game will be important to determine who may get a first-round bye for the quarterfinals.

Big Ultimate Mega Recap!
I'm really sorry for not posting this past week, but unfortunately this whole "college" thing isn't going away. A lot of stuff has happened, so I think it's time for a...
Big Ultimate Mega Recap!!!!
The Canes played 4 games over the past week, coming out with a 2-2 record, which isn't too shabby for this season.
They lost to the Oilers, which is pretty pathetic although it does help their quest for the lowest pick. (Which, by the way, the Canes are losing, allowing the Maple Leafs and Edmonton to slip between them and the bottom.)
They lost to the Flames.
They managed to win against Buffalo.
And they won against the Islanders - Justin Peters started his first game in that one - good for him to notch his first NHL win!
And through all this Erik Cole still hasn't managed to play a game! Are they keeping him in a storage shed a la Mike Leach?†
Tim Gleason was named to Team USA (which should have happened in the first place, not as an injury replacement... but whatever). The Canes Twitter feed provided this photo, which is absolutely amazing. Now I have a favorite player to cheer for on the team!
The Canes also traded the Secret Weapon, shipping Niclas Wallin and a fifth round pick to San Jose for a second round pick. A shame, because Wallin was always an asset in the times it mattered most (check the nickname), but I'm not overly surprised because Wallin had been in trade rumors for the past bazillion years. Hope San Jose goes well for him.
Cam Ward is out with some kind of back injury. Which is, y'know, just what you want your franchise goaltender to have. We'll get to see more of Justin Peters, which is nice, and this is making the Legace signing look a bit better.
I think that's all the news that has gone on over the past week... This is the last week of games before the Winter Olympic break - and I cannot wait until that begins!

Tim Gleason deserves a medal of awesomeness
Canes lost in overtime last night to the C[r]apitals 4-3.
Before this game was played, the absolutely horrid news came out that both Erik Cole and Chad LaRose would be placed on injured reserve for lingering injuries. Much wailing and sobbing was heard from this particular blogger because that means she will likely go the whole winter break without seeing both of her favorite players in action.
But, considering that Erik Cole was playing his best hockey while fighting off a lingering injury, I can't help but be hopeful for later on.
Patrick Dwyer and Jiri Tlusty were called up to replace them, and Tlusty was effective in his first game, scoring a goal in the first period. Further continuing the trend of "interesting things happening when I am missing hockey during class", Tim Gleason blocked a puck with his face in the first as well, requiring something like 30 stitches. Being the beast that he is, he came back in the game and tied it up on a breakaway shorthanded goal for the Canes in the third period.
Unfortunately, Gleason's pure bad-assery could not stop the C[r]apitals increasingly good play and the Canes lost in overtime. But we got a point out of the whole thing, so it's not too bad.
Bad news for Michael Leighton, the goalie issues were figured out, and he was sent down to the minors, leaving Manny Legace as Cam Ward's backup.
Canes play again tonight against Ottawa. Maybe they can continue this slight upswing in play that we've seen recently?

Canes drop first, are pathetic on powerplay
The Canes dropped their first game 2-0 to the Philadelphia Flyers last night.
First of all, let me just say that I don't believe you can really appreciate Chuck Kaiton until he is your only possible way of listening to a game. Also, the RBC must have been rocking at the start of the game, considering you could barely hear Chuck over the noise of the crowd.
That being said, after watching the "highlights" of the game, I am not that sad that I didn't see this one. It seemed like the Flyers took it to us, and we just couldn't convert. Not that we didn't have any opportunities, going zero-for-eight on the power play.
The penalty kill and power play are what killed the Canes, I think, seeing as both Philly goals came on a 4-minute Sergiei Samsonov high-sticking penalty (22 seconds apart, 47 seconds into the second period - aka "How to kill whatever momentum you might have had"). And, seriously, 0-for-8? That better not become a trend because that's just unacceptable.
Not to mention, the Canes were shut out against Ray Emery, a goalie who I really didn't think was going to be that good this year - I mean, come on, he played in the KHL last year. But either he's better than I thought, or we were just pathetic.
Tim Gleason got the first instigator penalty of the year, making him sit out 17 minutes of the game, after fighting Dan Carcillo who hit Ray Whitney from behind. And y'know, I'll take Gleason sitting out for that long just to make the point that punks like Carcillo can't take cheap knocks at our players. Good for Gleason to stick up for Ray Whitney.
Of course, I don't think that Gleason's absence helped the Canes at all on the defense, especially because Joni Pitkanen did not play in the game. But whatever, it's not like the defense was present when the Flyers scored their goals anyways.
Finally, props do go out to my man Erik Cole, who had two spectactular drives to the net which made the highlights. Unfortunately, he didn't convert on them, but it is a very good thing to see him as a presence on the ice in the first game.
The next game is tonight against Boston, who'll probably be out for revenge after their Game 7 loss in the playoffs. Maybe we'll score a goal in this one?

Tim Gleason!
Well, that game was a lot better. Canes won the second game against Jersey 2-1 in overtime.
This game had everything the first game lacked. The Canes came out with a fire in their step, and created a huge physical presence from the first minute. The only problem was that the huge emotional burst translated into a lot of stupid penalties taken by the Canes, one of which led to Jersey's only goal.
But, really, I'll take a few penalties in exchange for the fast-paced, in-your-face style of game that was played last night. It was very exciting to watch, and was extremely close throughout.
And, of course, props to Tim Gleason, scoring his first goal of the year to win the game in overtime. Talk about great timing!
I feel really good about this series coming to the RBC Center at 1-1. The Canes got of their postseason jitters out in the first game, and if they can carry the momentum and firey style of play into tomorrow's game, then I really think that we'll be heading back to Jersey with a 3-1 series.
*knock on wood* Of course, this is dependent on the Canes coming out as hyped up as the fans in the stands tomorrow. If the Canes slip back into the Game 1 lethargy, then it won't be very easy to win (or as fun to watch, for that matter).
Game 3 is tomorrow at 7:30!

Canes end winning streak
Canes lost 4-2 to the Panthers last night, ending their 4-game win streak.
Canes played well, but let the Panthers get two quick goals early in the third period, and they never recovered.
Tim Gleason went out of the game in the third period with what looked like a pretty nasty leg injury. According to "Canes Now" (somehow I liked "Lord Stanley's Blog better...), the Canes are optimistic that it's not a serious injury.
Meanwhile, Eric Staal was named to the All-Star team, the only Cane to be going to Montreal. He's probably the Cane that deserves it too (certainly not our esteemed captain, who still trails the entire league with a -26).
And, Scott Walker apparently has his own signature sandwich, the "Walker 24", now in local Harris Teeter stores. I haven't been able to find any details about what is actually in the sandwich, so I guess I'll have to pop in the local store to find out.
That's it for now. Canes play Boston (again) tomorrow in the afternoon.

Thanksgiving annoys me
So... Canes are playing tonight, which I didn't know until about an hour ago, and Tim Gleason is apparently out with an injury sustained in the Canes 5-2 loss to Nashville. Which is another game that I didn't see because it wasn't on TV.
Apparently the Canes went down 4-0 after the first two periods, and only managed two goals of that particular comeback before Shea Weber made it 5-2. In other words, it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't see that game.
Anyways, I'll be missing a string of games, taking my yearly Thanksgiving trip to Pennsylvania. You would think I would have lucked out, considering the Canes are playing the Flyers both of the games I'll miss, so maybe I would be able to pick up the Flyers feed? Haha. My aunt only gets two public access channels. I can't even be saved from family by football! (Although, considering the Thanksgiving match up of Tennessee-Detroit, I don't think I'm missing much...)
So, yeah. So long until Monday, I guess...

Live-blogging Phoenix v. Canes
Sooo... the Canes game is going on right now. And I'm at the computer (Instead of at the game, which I had tickets to, but couldn't go to because of the video game tournament fundraiser thingy I was a part of. Turnout was excellent, and totally worth not going to the game, something I'd thought I'd never say...), so I'm going to do my first foray into live-blogging!
The catch is I don't have a TV in this room. Just a radio. So... live-blogging on the radio... it'll be interesting that's for sure...
7:46 PM: It's 2-1 Coyotes. I missed the second goal, talking to my mom. Canes goal was scored by Eric Staal.
7:48 PM: I have no idea what's going on in the game. I can't hear the radio, someone's talking to me...

Canes look lame; lose
Canes lost their first preseason game last night against the C[r]apitals 4-1.
They played like crap pretty much the entire time. The game was boring, nothing really exciting or cool happened during it.
No one really stood out, either, except for Joni Pitkanen. He didn't really seem to make much of a presence on the ice - but then I would look to see who took a nice shot and it would be him. Maybe he's like a ninja - you don't see him until he strikes!
Anyways, Niclas Wallin looked like crap. He was a -2 on the night, too.
And the injury bug bit again - Gleason's out with some sort of leg injury. YaY.
Apparently the Canes are tied in their rematch against the C[r]apitals tonight. Hopefully they'll get their act together before the season starts. And hopefully they'll stop getting injured!

Canes make some moves
Canes made some moves yesterday. The first one being signing Tim Gleason to a 4-year/$11 mil contract. Which is good, keeping him here when our defense is rather lacking personnel right now. I thought he really started to play well last year, and I'm glad to have him locked up for four years.
The second move of the day was trading a fifth-round pick in the 2009 draft to the Predators for the rights to sign Darcy Hordichuk. If the Canes don't sign Hordichuk by the start of the season, they'll get the Predators 5th round pick in 2010.
Not sure exactly what this does for the Canes. From the looks of Hordichuk's career stats, he's definitely a goon and not a goal-contributing forward. But, I guess we have enough of those, and we could use an enforcer to protect our stars.
So, the draft is today. Canes pick 14th in the first round.
*EDIT 10:43am* So, after I looked at Darcy Hordichuk's website (via CanesCountry) and saw some of the fight videos on there... I have come to the conclusion that if the Canes can sign this guy, they will definitely be no worse off. And games might be a little bit more entertaining.

Wow, is that blood? Nah, must be red paint on the ice.
Well, Mick McGeough proved once again why he is the worst ref in the NHL in last night's 2-1 OT win over Jersey.
Tuomo Ruutu (who missed warmups, but still made the game) got stabbed in the face by Patrick Elias, and left a trail of blood leading back to the bench that could be blatantly seen from the third level. He needed 40 stitches to sew up the laceration.

Anyways, game was great for the Canes. They had some really good cycles against the Devils - and didn't really let them score, as Bret Hedican (I think it was him) inadvertantly knocked the puck in the net.
However, the game was not great for Tim Gleason, who got hit head first into the boards by Jersey's Mike Rupp. Scary looking when he tried to get up - almost had none of his own support skating off the ice. Only update on him I can get is that it's a head injury (duh), probably a concussion.
At least Wade Brookbank got Rupp back, totally kicking his arse later in the period.
Sergei Samsonov looked awesome, scoring both of the goals for the Canes.
Jeff Hamilton was sent down to Albany before the game.
I thought Ruutu played really well. He came out and had a huge hit on some Jersey dude, and looked to be a tough player - maybe a touch of scoring? He did get an assist on Samsonov's first goal.
As for Eaves (who also made his debut) - meh. Granted, he only had 6-ish minutes, but he did nothing spectactular.
Canes are looking great (Better than Ottawa, who fired their coach today). Tomorrow's game is against the Rangers.

Awesome loss
That was one of the most spectactular losses in a while.
It was what I would call a semi-come-from-behind victory - Canes lost 3-2 in a shootout after coming back from 2-0 with less than two minutes left.
The Canes got their energy jolt from a fight between Tim Gleason and Milan Lucic. Gleason hit somebody, and Lucic took umbrage with it, so they dropped the gloves. Lucic then proceeded to try and not get hit, but sort of failed at that, and Gleason totally won that fight.
Then Ray Whitney scored with 1:03 left in the game, giving the Canes another huge boost.
Then came my man Erik Cole, taking an awesome shot that ended up in the top shelf of the net.
Sadly, the Canes seemed to lose a little bit of gas in the OT, and then couldn't pull off a goal. Then they lost in the shootout.
Despite that, this game was completely awesome. Carolina had 47 shots on goal (it was amazing that they hadn't scored before the remaining two minutes) and they played well in the game, having numerous chances throughout.
The Staal-Cole-Whitney line was absolutely stellar - full of energy all night.
Cam actually looked pretty good, the two goals he gave up were power play ones that he couldn't really do much on (especially the first one, as it managed to deflect off of Chara while he was in front of the net).
Next game is tomorrow against Atlanta, who the Canes have a 3 point lead on in the division, but they have two games in hand...

Canes lose LaRose
Canes lost a close one against Nashville last night 1-0.
I only saw the second period, so I didn't see Chad LaRose lose an edge, crash into the boards, and break his leg in the first period.
Poor guy. And just what we needed, another person out with injury - especially LaRose who always has a jump in his step.
So the second period was one with a lot of chances for both teams, but no capitalization. (That doesn't sound right... oh well...)
Anyways, that's really all I can tell you about that game.
Tangentially related, I got Tim Gleason's autograph today. Yeah, I went to the Carolina Ale House and bought one of their magnet hearts, and he was there to autograph it.
While he was signing it I asked him if he rooted for UNC or Duke. (NOT a wierd question, as the game is on tonight. Stupid 9:00 start, though. I'm going to be so dead in the morning tomorrow. Why must the game be on so late? I wouldn't think there's a significant enough West Coast viewing share, so why not start it at 7:00?
...Back to hockey, now.) And he said that he didn't really watch it much, but he would choose (and he "thought" about it for a while) UNC. And I smiled and pointed at my shirt and said "Good choice". He laughed (because I guess he didn't know I was wearing it) and then said that he'd tell the lady behind me who was wearing a Duke shirt that he went for Duke.
It's really cool that the NHL players all seem to have a good humor while signing autographs. (At least the ones I've asked to sign my stuff... although somehow I don't think Sean Avery would come across as a nice guy...)

Tons of fights - Canes win!
Canes won 3-1 last night against the Rangers.
Wow, the first period was incredible. 66 penalty minutes. Scott Walker and Sean Avery got put in the box for roughing before the game even started! Brookbank and Orr fought, then Walker and Avery fought (with Gleason as third man - game misconduct for him), then Brookbank and Orr fought again. It was great.
As for the hockey part, the first period was crappy by both teams, although the Rangers scored the first goal.
In the second period, the Canes picked up their play, scoring two goals. The third was well-played as well, and Cam looked absolutely spectacular for the last 20 seconds when the Rangers had a 6-on-3.
Next game for the Canes is against the Maple Leafs tomorrow.
Oh yeah, Sean Avery - you're still a punk.

News and stuff
News today in the NHL: The New Jersey Devils fired coach Claude Julien with less than a week left in the season. GM Lou Lamoriello will step in as coach.
Why? I have no idea. No one actually addresses the "why" factor in the article.
As for the Canes, things aren't so tumultuous, but they certainly are coming down to the wire. They are currently in 10th place with 86 points, two behind Montreal, one behind Toronto, and two ahead of the Islanders.
I have made a pact with myself that I will not think about the future on this matter. I will only report on what has happened. This way I don't get my hopes too far up - if you're negative, you feel even better when things go positively, right?
Oh... and the N&O reports that Tim Gleason will more than likely be out with a broken finger. Great. Just what we need, another defenseman out.
Anyways... today is the first birthday of this blog. Yes, on April 2, 2006, I posted my first post evah!
