Oh. My. Goodness. Best hockey of the season tonight.
I've been able to see two games so far under the Muller regime, and I have to say I love it. The hockey I saw was absolutely amazing. It was entertaining, it actually used our offensive talents, it's creating a chemistry within the team that I hadn't seen up to this point.
Love love love love love it!
Tonight's game was great. The Canes beat the Canucks 4-3 - and the Canucks are no slouch of a team this season. Drayson Bowman had two goals and the offense overall seemed to be clicking and getting legitimate chances. Cam Ward was amazing. Finally I see the Ward that Caniacs have come to expect - making the tough saves to keep his team in the game.
Everything would appear to be coming together for this team system-wise. Finally! If only this had happened before the Canes were deep into a 'rebuilding season'.
Unfortunately, everything isn't coming together on the injury front. Both Joni Pitkanen and Jeff Skinner are out with concussions - I'm very disappointed, as I always love to see Skinner do his work on the ice. I really hope that they both come back soon. There seems to be a rash of concussions in the league recently, especially those which put players out for long periods of time.
I'm still in awe about tonight's play though. For the first time in a very long while I felt excited watching this team play. I've definitely missed this look from my favorite team.

Big Ultimate Mega Recap!
I'm really sorry for not posting this past week, but unfortunately this whole "college" thing isn't going away. A lot of stuff has happened, so I think it's time for a...
Big Ultimate Mega Recap!!!!
The Canes played 4 games over the past week, coming out with a 2-2 record, which isn't too shabby for this season.
They lost to the Oilers, which is pretty pathetic although it does help their quest for the lowest pick. (Which, by the way, the Canes are losing, allowing the Maple Leafs and Edmonton to slip between them and the bottom.)
They lost to the Flames.
They managed to win against Buffalo.
And they won against the Islanders - Justin Peters started his first game in that one - good for him to notch his first NHL win!
And through all this Erik Cole still hasn't managed to play a game! Are they keeping him in a storage shed a la Mike Leach?†
Tim Gleason was named to Team USA (which should have happened in the first place, not as an injury replacement... but whatever). The Canes Twitter feed provided this photo, which is absolutely amazing. Now I have a favorite player to cheer for on the team!
The Canes also traded the Secret Weapon, shipping Niclas Wallin and a fifth round pick to San Jose for a second round pick. A shame, because Wallin was always an asset in the times it mattered most (check the nickname), but I'm not overly surprised because Wallin had been in trade rumors for the past bazillion years. Hope San Jose goes well for him.
Cam Ward is out with some kind of back injury. Which is, y'know, just what you want your franchise goaltender to have. We'll get to see more of Justin Peters, which is nice, and this is making the Legace signing look a bit better.
I think that's all the news that has gone on over the past week... This is the last week of games before the Winter Olympic break - and I cannot wait until that begins!

Tim Gleason deserves a medal of awesomeness
Canes lost in overtime last night to the C[r]apitals 4-3.
Before this game was played, the absolutely horrid news came out that both Erik Cole and Chad LaRose would be placed on injured reserve for lingering injuries. Much wailing and sobbing was heard from this particular blogger because that means she will likely go the whole winter break without seeing both of her favorite players in action.
But, considering that Erik Cole was playing his best hockey while fighting off a lingering injury, I can't help but be hopeful for later on.
Patrick Dwyer and Jiri Tlusty were called up to replace them, and Tlusty was effective in his first game, scoring a goal in the first period. Further continuing the trend of "interesting things happening when I am missing hockey during class", Tim Gleason blocked a puck with his face in the first as well, requiring something like 30 stitches. Being the beast that he is, he came back in the game and tied it up on a breakaway shorthanded goal for the Canes in the third period.
Unfortunately, Gleason's pure bad-assery could not stop the C[r]apitals increasingly good play and the Canes lost in overtime. But we got a point out of the whole thing, so it's not too bad.
Bad news for Michael Leighton, the goalie issues were figured out, and he was sent down to the minors, leaving Manny Legace as Cam Ward's backup.
Canes play again tonight against Ottawa. Maybe they can continue this slight upswing in play that we've seen recently?

Canes lose another two. Whatever.
Well, a little less than a week has passed, and we can chalk up two more losses on the road. Ho-hum, same old, same old.
The first loss was 2-0 against the Stars on Monday. Didn't listen to the game, so I don't know really much about it. Recap says that a Ray Whitney goal was called back due to the fact it was kicked over or something like that. Biggest (and worst) news of the night was the fact that Tuomo Ruutu went out with an injury, adding another player to the growing list of Canes casualties on the season.
The second loss was last night against the Ducks where the Canes lost 3-2. Eric Staal came off of the IR for this one, and he played pretty well, getting an assist in the third period.
I thought that the Canes played pretty well. Besides for some rough patches in the first period, they actually played solid hockey for once (or the Ducks were looking pretty poor... whatever). Tom Kostopoulos scored a very nice goal off due to the fact that he was square in front of the net with no one around him when Ray Whitney tossed it to him.
Unfortunately, the Canes broke down as they always seem to, allowing a goal at the very end of the second period to let Anaheim tie it up. Then came two in the third, including a game-breaker with a minute thirty left. Brandon Sutter managed to score thirty seconds later, but it wasn't enough for the Canes to win.
I'm not quite as angry at these losses as I was during the losing streak probably because I've accepted the fact that this current Canes team tends to lose a lot, and they're currently playing better while still losing.
Maybe if we get some more people healthy it'll continue to improve. Maybe winning one on the road? But that might be too much to ask. We'll have to wait to see if the Canes can pull that off, as the next game is a bout with the Thrashers tomorrow at the RBC Center.

We've got us a new goalie...
Well, it looks like Cam Ward's going to be out 3-4 weeks, so faced with the prospect of an extended period with Michael Leighton and Justin Peters, the Canes went and signed Manny Legace to a two-way contract.
Really, I think the Canes should apologize to Legace for taking him from the winning AHL Chicago Wolves (winning being a relative word, as they are 5-7-1 on the season... but that just about blows us out of the water) and planting him on a miserable last place NHL team.
Although, it's a complete no-pressure situation for Manny, for if the Canes lose with him in goal then there's no way he can be pinned as the problem... and if somehow the Canes begin to win, he'll be hailed as a hero.
So congratulations on the signing, Mr. Legace. Don't expect that 3.21 GAA from the AHL to get much better on this team.

We hit rock bottom... and then we started drilling...
The Canes lost to Columbus 3-2 last night, Erik Cole scoring the first goal, then the Canes allowing three within three and a half minutes of the third to lose the game. Nothing new there.
The horrible news? Cam Ward got cut by Rick Nash's skate in the first period. He was immediately helped off the ice, and had to stay overnight in a Columbus hospital.
I said in my last post that the Canes couldn't get any worse. I was obviously not envisioning going without our Conn Smythe winning goaltender.
Hopefully he won't be out too long.

A dark depression has fallen upon us...
And the true days of infinite sadness are upon us - Erik Cole is out 4-6 weeks with a fracture in his lower left leg.
The Canes better start winning, otherwise I don't know what I'm going to do without Cole to cheer for.

Canes win one and lose one
Well... I'm not sure what to think of this weekend.
On Valentine's Day, the Canes got their butt kicked for the second game in a row, losing 5-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets. This game wasn't much better than the previous shutout, except, of course, that this time the Canes managed to score a goal. And there were some better chances than in the Florida game, but that doesn't change the fact that the Canes handily lost this one.
Then, last night, the Canes had a shutout of their own, beating Buffalo 3-0. Wasn't able to watch this game, as it wasn't on TV, but from what I've gleaned from the highlights and recap, it looks like the Canes got out to an early lead and were able to keep it for the entire game. Watching some of the saves made, the Canes probably could have scored some more goals.
The bad news following this win is that Justin Williams broke a bone in his hand and will be out at least a month. Man, this guy just can't stay healthy! (Although, this development makes the Jussi Jokinen trade look particularly good.)
The next game is tomorrow against the Bruins. Hopefully the Canes will put on a good show, as it's Glen Wesley night, with the number 2 being raised to the rafters.

Wow...
We actually came out of San Jose with a win! Well, a shootout win, but a win all the same.
I'm very impressed. Considering how we've been beaten by the Bruins this season, I didn't think the Canes would win against the leaders of the West. Obviously, I was wrong.
And, wow, I just watched the highlights online - man, was that third Canes goal sweet. I mean, LaRose passes to Whitney, who shoots through the crease to get it to Cullen, streaking in from the blue line, who then passed back to Whitney to knock it in - Wow!
Michael Leighton also looked like he made some pretty stellar saves - maybe some of the goals were a bit soft, but the saves online are definitely highlight reel quality.
The bad news about this win is that Eric Staal left in the third with some kind of lower-body injury, although it sounds day-to-day at the worst.
The next game is against Phoenix tomorrow. I can tell you that I have a much better outlook on this team after this game.

Canes lose, hopefully will win tonight
Canes lost 4-3 to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. Previously, the Canucks had lost nine straight at home, and eight straight in general.
*facepalm*
Well, it certainly looks like that wonderful win against Atlanta was a fluke. Granted, I didn't watch any of the game, but comments like these taken from the TSN.ca article don't make me feel warm and fuzzy about this game:
Oh boy. Yeah, I'm pretty glad that I was fast asleep when this game was on. I think a shorthanded goal against to lose the game would have put me in an absolutely horrible mood.
The real test, though, is tonight against San Jose, the leader of the Western Conference. If we can play with them and win (heck, normally I'd say just play with them, but that won't help us come April) then I feel that the Canes have a good shot. If we get steamrolled, I'm not going to be too optimistic about our playoff chances.
The Canes are going to be without Rod Brind'Amour in the game tonight. Apparently he came back to Raleigh because of "nagging lower body issues", and Jakub Petruzalek (best name ever!) was called up in his place. I'm not entirely sure that this is a bad thing, considering the captain's lame play pretty much the entire season.
Apparently, the Canes are also going to be going with Michael Leighton in goal tonight, a move I find somewhat peculiar, as Cam has started the last sixteen or so games. Why the change, and specifically, why the change against the best team in the West? Maybe they're looking for a change to spark the rest of the lineup. Whatever, I just hope it works out.

Canes end winning streak
Canes lost 4-2 to the Panthers last night, ending their 4-game win streak.
Canes played well, but let the Panthers get two quick goals early in the third period, and they never recovered.
Tim Gleason went out of the game in the third period with what looked like a pretty nasty leg injury. According to "Canes Now" (somehow I liked "Lord Stanley's Blog better...), the Canes are optimistic that it's not a serious injury.
Meanwhile, Eric Staal was named to the All-Star team, the only Cane to be going to Montreal. He's probably the Cane that deserves it too (certainly not our esteemed captain, who still trails the entire league with a -26).
And, Scott Walker apparently has his own signature sandwich, the "Walker 24", now in local Harris Teeter stores. I haven't been able to find any details about what is actually in the sandwich, so I guess I'll have to pop in the local store to find out.
That's it for now. Canes play Boston (again) tomorrow in the afternoon.

A win!
Canes got their first win under Paul Maurice (well, at least the second time around) with a 3-1 win over the C[r]apitals yesterday. (3-2 in the 3rd jerseys!)
Canes played pretty well, I thought. They scored first for the first time in... 13 games, I think. Ray Whitney notched two goals and Eric Staal got a goal, something that hasn't happened in a while either.
The bad news is that Anton Babchuk is probably out with some sort of elbow/arm injury. Yes, yet another defenseman went down. But, according to this article, we should be getting Seidenberg back for Thursday, so I don't think the Canes will have to call up any more people from Albany.

An abrupt end to the game
Canes lost in OT 2-1 to the Flyers last night.
They didn't play too bad, I thought. Again, they came out with more enthusiasm than in some past games.
Sadly, that didn't stop them from giving up a stupid shorthanded goal in the first period. Defensive turnovers are not fun to watch, especially on your own power play.
Wade Brookbank fighting is always fun to watch, though. I managed to take the following snapshot:
Which is, coincidentally, the only picture I took at last night's game. I got tired of taking pictures of empty ice due to my camera's slow shutter speed.
Anyways... the third period was a very good period to watch - very exciting. Probably could've been less of a sloppy period, but I don't care, it's always fun to watch chances on both ends of the ice.
Sergei Samsonov had an excellent power play goal, knocking one in a pretty much vacant net. This allowed the game to go into overtime!
Which was absolutely completely lame. Not necessarily for the Canes play - but for the way it ended. It was one of those things where I'm looking at the jumbotron at a very creepy clip of a dancing Santa Claus and then - BAM! The puck's in the net. Pretty much right off of the faceoff Jeff Carter just blasts one by Michael Leighton. It was a fair goal - but it's not fun having such an abrupt end to the night, especially when the Canes had been doing well in the third and overtime periods.
Oh great... I just actually *read* the article I linked to (versus just skimming it). Looks like Wallin might be out for today's game with an ankle injury. Not good. We already were only playing with six defensemen, two of them having been called up from Albany for injuries to Gleason, Seidenberg, and Kaberle.
Won't this team ever be healthy?

We already were only playing with six defensemen, two of them having been called up from Albany for injuries to Gleason, Seidenberg, and Kaberle.

Thanksgiving was not very kind to the Canes record
Soooo... The Canes went 1-3 over my Thanksgiving break... Not very good.
First, the Canes lost to Florida 3-2.
Then they lost to Philadelphia 3-1 (while wearing their third jerseys... making them 2-2 on the season with them... I'm not exactly sure why I'm continuing that stat, other than now that I've started, I certainly can't stop...)
Then they won in Philly 3-2 in overtime. I saw the first period of that game (while eating a delicious cheesesteak), which was merely an okay showing by the Canes. I also saw Wade Brookbank's fight, which was an excellent fight to watch, the referees letting them go at it for quite a bit. Don't think either one won the fight, though.
Sergei Samsonov scored in the overtime period.
Finally, they lost 4-1 to the Ducks yesterday. About the time of puck drop I was lamenting the Washington Redskins' slow shuttle system to take us back to our parking spot all the way on the other side of I-495. Yep, I went the Giants-Redskins game on the way back from Pennsylvania - froze my butt off in the stupid mist, too (although my six layers of clothing did keep me moderately warm...)
Anyways... Canes lost Cam Ward to a groin injury in that Ducks game - he'll be out for the next three games and Justin Peters will be called up to back up Leighton.
Good news on the injury front (unexpected news as well) is that Justin Williams of all people will more than likely be back on the ice sometime this week. And this is after busting his Achilles' tendon in training camp. ("Busting" being the proper medical term in cases such as these.) Good news - we could definitely use him out on the ice. I just hope he doesn't get injured from coming back too fast.
Next game is on Thursday against Pittsburgh.

Thanksgiving annoys me
So... Canes are playing tonight, which I didn't know until about an hour ago, and Tim Gleason is apparently out with an injury sustained in the Canes 5-2 loss to Nashville. Which is another game that I didn't see because it wasn't on TV.
Apparently the Canes went down 4-0 after the first two periods, and only managed two goals of that particular comeback before Shea Weber made it 5-2. In other words, it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't see that game.
Anyways, I'll be missing a string of games, taking my yearly Thanksgiving trip to Pennsylvania. You would think I would have lucked out, considering the Canes are playing the Flyers both of the games I'll miss, so maybe I would be able to pick up the Flyers feed? Haha. My aunt only gets two public access channels. I can't even be saved from family by football! (Although, considering the Thanksgiving match up of Tennessee-Detroit, I don't think I'm missing much...)

Recaps and stuff
I have some overdue game recaps for you, my loyal readers.
First: Canes won 1-0 over Blues on last Thursday. The goal in that one was scored in Tuomo Ruutu, which I didn't see because I went to bed in the middle of the second period. I did realize in this game that, if you happen to be in a bad mood, John & Tripp on FSN South will absolutely cheer you up with their (sometimes useful, sometimes not) blabbering and random factoids.
Second: Canes lost 3-1 to the Oilers Saturday. I was receiving text messages about the score under a dinner table, so I can't really say how the Canes played in this one. I think Matt Cullen got injured, but I can't find an article easily to back that up, so whatever.
Third: The Canes picked up their first third jersey win 6-3 against Toronto. I watched this game, but can't really remember much except that the Canes started out looking like crap, but then they did a massive scoring flurry in the last four minutes of the second period to take the lead. Very good.
Then last night, the Canes won again against Toronto, this time in overtime 5-4. They should have won it in regulation, having gotten out to a 3-0 lead so quickly in the first, looking like they had completely demoralized the Leafs.
But nooooooooo, the Canes decided to mail it in, so the game had to be won by The Secret Weapon, Nic Wallin. Which was incredibly lucky.
So the next game is Thursday at Washington.
In random news: Brind'Amour, Staal, and Whitney made it onto the All-Star ballot.
And Marty Brodeur will be out 3-4 months after elbow surgery to repair a torn biceps tendon. And the description of what happened completely makes me cringe:

Brodeur extended his arm trying to make a save and ended up tearing the tendon that connects the bicep to the elbow off the bone.Owie! And that completely sinks the Devils chances this season, a bummer for them - because Brodeur is one heckuva goalie.

Injury bug strikes again!
It's been announced that Brandon Sutter ended up with a concussion after the hit on Saturday night.
And, Joni Pitkanen is out 3-4 weeks because he must have surgery to repair a meniscus.
*facepalm* This is not news I wanted to hear.
Dwight Helminen has been called up from Albany to replace Sutter. Next game is tomorrow.

Interesting ending, to say the least...
Canes won 4-3 last night against the Islanders.
An interesting game, to say the least. The Canes played much better throughout the game - but the Islanders got 60 shots on goal. That's a shot a minute! Luckily, Cam Ward was able to stop 57 of them.
None of those shots was more important than the last one. Gleason covered up the puck in the crease, leading to a penalty shot for the Islanders - with only .7 seconds left on the clock.
Talk about putting the game on the line... put Cam Ward turned up with a big stop against Doug Weight, and the Canes won it.
Chad LaRose looked great, getting his first two goals of the year for him.
Bad news, though. Brandon Sutter went out in the third period after Doug Weight leveled him with a shoulder to the head. Wasn't Weight's fault - a victim of unfortunate circumstance most likely - but Sutter took a few minutes to come to and wobble off the ice.
I really hope that he's not seriously injured. He's had a great start this year for his rookie season, and that would be a real bummer to have him knocked out.
More updates on that when I read 'em...
Next Canes game is in Montreal Tuesday - no TV, so I'll be listening to Chuck K on the radio...

Canes do okay over the weekend
Canes did okay this weekend, dropping one in overtime to the Kings and winning one over the Ducks.
And, despite having seen highlights or actual parts of each game, I can't remember anything about either game.
Except that Cam continued to look sort of shaky on some of the Kings goals, and the Canes seemed to completely lose it in the second period against the Ducks.
Oh, and Kaberle went out of the Kings game with some sort of leg injury... yes, we have yet another injury...
Next game is back on the East Coast, against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Preseason's over!
Let's see here, what's happened in the past week?
Canes won twice against Nashville, finishing the preseason at a 3-3 record.
They also signed their first-round pick from this year's draft, Zach Boychuk, to an entry-level contract.
Scott Walker had surgery on his left hand, which was injured in his fight against Philly.
This opened up a roster spot for Dan LaCouture, who was signed to a two-way contract after a stellar training camp for the free agent tryout.
And the good news, we're already ahead in the Southeast Division, with the Lightning losing their both of their overseas openers to the Rangers!
Opening Night in less than four days!
